Chapter 9 - Fire at the Lake

The Mercer lake house sat forty miles north of the city, surrounded by pines and old stone walls.
Daniel had not slept there since Claire died.
Every room held a memory he did not want and a question he had never asked.
Mara brought two officers. Owen remained with Lily. Jenna stayed at the clinic under protection.
The pantry floorboard came up with a crowbar.
Beneath it was a rusted metal cash box.
Inside, Daniel found a burner phone, a flash drive, and another photograph of Nora and Gavin together. This one was older.
Much older.
On the back Claire had written:
G + N. Harbor fundraiser. Ask why they lied.
The date was five years ago—before Claire’s death.
Daniel plugged the flash drive into an offline police laptop.
Folders opened across the screen.
Invoices. Bank transfers. Vendor contracts. Screenshots of messages.
One message from Gavin to Nora read:
Evelyn is watching the tea now. Be smarter.
Another, sent weeks later:
Daniel still thinks Claire’s crash was random. Keep it that way.
Daniel felt sick.
Mara leaned closer. “Don’t touch anything else.”
A smell reached them.
Smoke.
One of the officers shouted from the hall. “Fire!”
Flames climbed the back stairwell with unnatural speed.
“Out!” Mara yelled.
Daniel grabbed the cash box. An officer pulled a fire extinguisher from the wall, but the smoke thickened instantly.
They ran through the kitchen toward the front door.
A beam cracked overhead.
Daniel stumbled. The cash box hit the floor and burst open. The burner phone skidded beneath a cabinet.
“Leave it!” Mara shouted.
Daniel snatched the flash drive and photographs, then followed her outside.
They reached the lawn as the upper windows blew outward.
Heat rolled across the grass.
Daniel bent over, coughing.
Then he saw movement beyond the trees.
A man sprinting toward the old service road.
Tall. Dark jacket. Gray baseball cap.
“Hey!” Daniel ran after him.
Mara shouted his name, but he kept going.
The man reached a black SUV and pulled open the door.
For one second, he turned.
Daniel saw his face clearly.
Gavin.
Their eyes met across thirty feet of smoke and pine needles.
Gavin did not look shocked to see him.
He looked annoyed.
Then he drove away.
Mara reached Daniel seconds later.
“You just contaminated half my case by trying to become an action hero.”
“That was Gavin.”
“I know.”
Daniel stared at the burning house.
His phone rang.
Owen.
Daniel answered.
“Tell me Lily’s safe.”
Owen’s voice was tight.
“She is. But Nora just video-called her.”
Daniel went still.
“What did she say?”
May you like
Owen hesitated.
“She told Lily her mother would still be alive if you had listened to her.”
