Chapter 14 - The Blue Music Box

The card contained Claire’s private archive.

Daniel sat beside Mara as an evidence technician opened the files on an isolated computer.

Claire had photographed invoices from North Vale Holdings. She had screenshots of messages between Gavin and a contact saved only as N. She had a spreadsheet comparing work Mercer Industrial paid for against work that had actually been done.

Millions were missing.

But the final folder was named IF SOMETHING HAPPENS.

Daniel could not make himself open it.

Mara did.

The first file was an audio recording.

Claire’s voice filled the room.

“You’re stealing from him.”

Gavin answered. “You’re reading things you don’t understand.”

“I understand fake invoices.”

“You understand charity events and school pickups. Stay in your lane.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Then a woman spoke in the background.

Nora.

“She won’t stop, Gavin.”

Claire sounded shocked. “You.”

Nora laughed softly. “You finally noticed me.”

“What are you doing in my house?”

“What I’ve been doing for months. Cleaning up your husband’s blind spots.”

There was movement, then Claire said, “Daniel is going to hear this.”

Gavin’s voice turned cold.

“No, he isn’t.”

The recording ended.

Daniel sat motionless.

The next file was video from a small garage camera Claire had apparently installed herself after items went missing from her car.

The image was grainy but clear enough.

The night before Claire’s fatal crash, Gavin entered the garage with another man. They opened the hood of Claire’s car and worked for several minutes near the front wheel assembly.

No audio.

No Nora.

But Gavin was unmistakable.

Daniel covered his mouth.

Mara’s voice stayed professional, but her eyes hardened. “That’s enough to reopen the death investigation.”

There were more files: copies of emails, a list of dates, and one photograph of Nora’s driver’s license from years earlier.

Her address matched the registration address of North Vale Holdings.

Claire had solved the scheme before anyone else.

And she had died for it.

Daniel drove back to Lily after midnight.

He sat on the edge of her bed until she woke.

“Daddy?”

He took her hand.

“Your mom was very brave.”

Lily blinked sleepily. “Like me?”

His throat closed.

“Exactly like you.”

Across town, Mara prepared arrest warrants for Gavin Ross and Nora Mercer.

At 2:17 a.m., a patrol unit reached Nora’s temporary residence.

The front door was open.

The rooms were empty.

On the kitchen counter sat a single teacup.

Under it was a note.

TELL DANIEL WE ARE NOT FINISHED.
