Chapter 11 - What the Bride Knew

"Nora," Adrian repeated. "My wife died eighteen months ago. How could she have reopened anything?"
Celia glanced at the empty street. "She filed a request before she got sick. The state misplaced it. They found the request when a new investigator reviewed the warehouse fire records."
"And you knew?"
"Owen found out last week. He told Preston."
"Then you let me plan a wedding while they were planning to take my daughter and my company."
Celia's voice rose. "I didn't know about Ivy until this morning. Preston promised the guardianship application was only leverage."
"Leverage against a six-year-old?"
She looked away.
Adrian stepped back. Celia had learned the language of his grief only to get close enough to take his pen.
"Were you ever going to tell me?" he asked.
"I was going to stop the demolition after we married. I thought I could make everyone compromise."
"You don't compromise with a building full of sleeping families."
Celia wiped at her eyes, angry that tears had come. "Preston paid off my father's debts after he died. Our family owes him everything."
"A debt doesn't give him ownership of you."
"Easy for you to say. You were born with enough money to walk away from it."
"Apparently I wasn't born with the truth."
Tessa interrupted with a call. The court had ordered the demolition temporarily paused pending a hearing, but preservation of the records was still disputed.
"We have to establish a chain of custody," she said. "Photograph every item from the wall. Don't let anybody handle the originals without a record."
Adrian thanked her, then looked at Celia one last time.
"If you want to do something right, send Tessa every message Preston sent you about Ash Street."
"My brother would lose his license."
"Then he should've thought about that before he took Ivy."
Celia walked toward her SUV. At the door, she paused.
"There's a second copy of the insurance file," she said. "Your father kept it."
"Where?"
"In the one place you still refuse to go."
Adrian felt his throat tighten.
May you like
"Nora's old bedroom?"
Celia nodded. "Preston had the locks changed the week after her funeral."
