Chapter 15 - Box 308

Tessa refused to let Adrian march into the bank demanding access.
"A key isn't permission," she reminded him. "If it belongs to your father, we need legal authority."
They brought it to the investigator handling the reopened fire inquiry, Dana Brooks, along with the photographs, Nora's recording, and the documents recovered from the mural wall.
Brooks listened without interruption. When Adrian finished, she made him repeat exactly how the key had been found.
"It's evidence, not a treasure map," she said. "Do not touch anything else on your own."
"Then tell me what's inside."
"We can seek the appropriate order. I won't guess before we have it."
That afternoon, the court heard Tessa's motion to preserve Ash Street House. Preston's lawyers called Lena unreliable and argued that the documents were decades old. Marisol testified about the building's residents and the recent attempted entry. The judge ordered the demolition halted while inspectors and investigators examined the site.
Outside the courtroom, Adrian exhaled for the first time in two days.
"We bought them time," he said.
"Not bought," Tessa replied. "The evidence earned it."
Across the hall, Preston approached alone.
"You'd destroy your own father's reputation for a woman you barely know?" he demanded.
"I know she wrote me letters you never let me read."
"You're throwing away everything I built."
"You built a lot of it on someone else's silence."
Preston looked suddenly exhausted. "I loved you, Adrian. I still do."
Adrian didn't look away. "Maybe you do. But love that needs a child to believe his mother is dead isn't love I can trust."
Brooks emerged from the courthouse entrance before Preston could answer.
"Mr. Ward," she said, "we've received records that may identify the authorized user of Box 308."
Adrian glanced at his father.
Brooks continued, "The second name on the access agreement isn't Preston Ward."
May you like
"Whose is it?"
"Your mother's. Lena Ward."
