Chapter 12 - The Room Nobody Entered

Adrian hadn't entered Nora's bedroom since she died.
When her illness made stairs impossible, she'd moved to the guest room on the ground floor. After the funeral, he'd closed that door and spent a year convincing himself he was honoring her privacy. In truth, he couldn't bear to see her slippers beside the bed.
The house was dark when he returned. Miles checked the security system while Lena made Ivy a sandwich in the kitchen.
"You don't have to go in alone," Lena offered.
"I know. But I think I have to be the one to open it."
Adrian used a locksmith recommended by Tessa, who confirmed the house was in Adrian's name and that he had authority to access the room. The lock clicked open. Nora's scarf still hung on the bedpost. Touching it nearly broke him.
"I'm sorry," he whispered. "I kept telling you I'd handle everything when you got better."
Tessa waited in the hallway while Adrian searched. A false back panel in the closet held a slim gray document case. Inside were copies of financial transfers from the fire-relief fund to a consulting company established by Preston and Owen Hart Senior.
There was also a sealed envelope addressed to Adrian.
He sat on the floor and opened it.
Nora wrote that she'd met Lena at a charity library event. She hadn't believed her at first, but childhood details and research into the fire convinced her Preston had lied.
I didn't tell you because I wanted proof before I gave you hope, Nora wrote. Then I got sick, and every week I thought we'd have more time. I'm sorry I was wrong about that.
Adrian pressed the letter against his chest.
The final page said: Tell Ivy the truth, even when she's little. Children understand love better than secrets.
Tessa's voice broke the silence. "Adrian, there's something else."
From behind the closet panel, she drew a small recording device wrapped in Nora's scarf.

On its memory card was one file, recorded six days before Nora's death.
The filename read: PRESTON.ADMISSION.
