Chapter 9 - The Price of Staying Alive

Lena asked him to sit in the day-care's tiny office before she spoke.

"I signed a confession," she said.

Adrian felt the room tilt. "To stealing the relief money?"

"To authorizing the transfer. Your father said he'd let you visit me if I did. He put a visitation schedule in front of me, Adrian. With your name printed at the top."

"And afterward?"

"Afterward, the settlement was sealed. Your father told me you were dead. Six months later, I spotted you in a school photograph and knew he'd lied."

Adrian closed his eyes. He wasn't angry at her. He was angry that a mother could lose her reputation for a promised afternoon with her son.

"Why didn't you fight?"

"I did. I went to the police. I went to lawyers I couldn't afford. I slept in my car for a winter. Being right doesn't automatically make you powerful."

Her voice broke only on the last sentence.

Adrian sat beside her. "You don't have to prove you suffered enough to deserve me."

Lena wept.

A knock came at the office door. Marisol appeared with Ivy, who had insisted on coming with Miles rather than staying at the hotel. She held a folded drawing of three people in a house with green windows.

"This is us," Ivy announced. "I made extra space for Grandma."

For one brief moment, the case, the wedding, and the looming demolition fell away.

Then Miles's radio crackled.

"Trouble at the south entrance," a guard said. "Someone's here to take the child."

Adrian went outside. Celia stood beside a silver SUV, holding a folder and wearing the same white dress she had worn when the wedding fell apart.

"I don't want a scene," she told him. "I just want to know you're safe."

"I'm fine."

"That's not what your father says. He filed emergency guardianship papers for Ivy. He says you've been exposing her to a woman who forged her identity."

Adrian stared at the papers in her hand.

At the top, a hearing was scheduled for the next morning.

And beneath the petition, Celia's signature appeared as the proposed temporary guardian.
