Chapter 6 - The Box Nora Left Behind

Tessa met them outside storage at ten. The wedding cake was still uncut.

"This is not how Nora wanted you to find out," Tessa said.

Adrian stared at her. "You knew my mother was alive?"

"I knew Nora suspected it. She asked me to keep these papers safe. But she made me promise not to hand them over until I had confirmation."

"Confirmation of what?"

Tessa unlocked Unit 214. Inside stood three cardboard boxes, a child's bicycle, and the yellow raincoat Nora had worn on their first vacation together.

He touched the raincoat, remembering how Nora had made bad weather an adventure.

Ivy leaned against him. "Mommy said yellow was a brave color."

"She did," he whispered.

Tessa opened the smallest box. It contained a notebook, a faded family photograph, and a stack of letters addressed to Adrian in Lena's handwriting.

"These came back unopened," Tessa said. "Every one stamped RETURN TO SENDER. Nora found them after Preston's former assistant died."

Adrian read the first letter. Lena had written about his ninth birthday, how she hoped he liked the red bicycle he'd once wanted, and how she would spend the day in the park across from his school even if she couldn't see him.

He opened another. Then another.

By the seventh letter, he sat on the floor.

"I thought she chose not to come," he said.

Lena crouched beside him. "I was there. I just wasn't allowed through the gate."

Adrian looked at Ivy. He saw the boy he'd been, certain everyone he loved would disappear.

"Ivy," he said, "I need you to know something. When someone tells you a person doesn't love you, that doesn't make it true."

"I know," she said. "Grandma told me."

Tessa lifted the notebook. Nora had made a timeline of Ash Street inspections, insurance changes, and emergency calls. The final page contained a handwritten warning dated three weeks before Nora died.

IF PRESTON MOVES ON ASH STREET, LOOK BEHIND THE CHILDREN'S MURAL.
