Chapter 1 - The Door That Stayed Shut

"Wait! Why is the door locked?" Natalie Mercer shouted, slamming her palm against the black keypad.

Behind her, ten relatives stood in the snow with fourteen suitcases, a stroller, and enough Christmas presents to stock a department store. Her eight-year-old nephew was crying. Her sister Brooke was recording everything. And the beautiful house Natalie had promised them for Christmas was refusing to open.

"Try the code again," her husband, Ryan, said.

"I have tried it six times!"

Her phone rang before he could answer. EVELYN flashed across the screen.

"You need to unlock this door," Natalie snapped.

Four miles away, Evelyn Mercer drove her dark SUV along a two-lane road lined with frozen pines. At sixty-nine, she had learned that anger could be quieter than a whisper. Her royal-blue coat was buttoned to her throat; her hands rested steady on the wheel.

"I'm not coming back," she said.

"What do you mean you're not coming back?"

"You invited everyone without asking me. Now you can figure it out."

Ryan leaned in. "Mom, where are you?"

Evelyn heard his voice and felt an old ache. She had taught him to tie his shoes at this house. She had held his father here when the ambulance failed to arrive in time. Now her son was standing outside acting as though the house had appeared out of thin air.

"And there's something else you don't know," she said.

"What else?" Natalie demanded.

"The lock isn't the surprise. Look in the blue envelope I left under the porch light."

Evelyn ended the call.

Natalie turned and found the envelope tucked behind a brass planter. Inside were two pages and a single photograph: a smiling man at a kitchen table, holding a yellow legal pad. Ryan went white when he saw him.

"That's Dad," he said.

At the bottom of the first page, in bold letters, were the words OCCUPANCY PERMISSION REVOKED.

"This is some kind of prank," Brooke announced to her phone.

Ryan took the second page. His mother's handwriting filled the margin: Ask Natalie what she signed last Thursday.

He looked slowly at his wife.

"Natalie," he said, "what did you sign?"
