Chapter 11 - The Bell Above the Water

The old Lake Harbor boat club closed every winter. Paul had once repaired its wiring, and Evelyn remembered a blue boathouse with a brass bell above the entrance. She gave Torres the address and stayed behind when officers went to investigate.

Waiting was harder than acting. Hannah paced the station until Evelyn offered her a chair and a paper cup of tea.

"My daughter talks when she's scared," Hannah said. "People think she's being difficult."

"My husband talked when he was scared," Evelyn answered. "He called it explaining."

Hannah let out a small, startled laugh. It was the first breath she'd taken without crying.

Ryan watched his mother. For months he had told himself she was getting rigid, suspicious, impossible to please. The truth was that she remained the person who could steady someone else's worst day while carrying her own.

The radio cracked. Officers had reached the boat club. They found fresh tire tracks and a padlocked storage shed.

Minutes passed.

Then Torres came through the door. "We have Elsie. She's safe."

Hannah made a sound too small to be a scream, then pressed both hands to her face. Torres explained that Derek was not there when they arrived. Elsie had been left with a blanket, bottled water, and a phone without service. A medic was checking her, and Hannah would be reunited with her shortly.

The good news did not erase the danger. Derek still had the notebooks and the ability to contact Natalie.

In the station parking lot, Ryan found a voicemail he had missed. Derek's voice was calm, almost friendly.

"Tell your mother I know about the cabin," he said. "Tell her not to pretend she's the only one who can keep secrets."

Ryan drove to Mara's office and played the message. Evelyn closed her eyes.

"The cabin?" Mara asked.

"Paul and I bought a little place before Ryan was born," Evelyn said. "I sold it the year Paul got sick."

"To whom?"

"I thought I knew."

Her phone showed a newly delivered real-estate tax notice. The cabin was still registered to a trust bearing her signature.

And the trustee named on the notice was Natalie Mercer.
