Chapter 10 - What Paul Promised

Paul had never met Derek, or so Evelyn believed. June described the note as if reading it hurt her eyes. "The money was never yours," it said. "Paul promised me what was left."

Mara asked June to leave the hat untouched and call local police. The evidence had become more complicated than a forged rental contract.

At the station, Evelyn unfolded Paul's old letter. On the last page, beneath a sketch of the house, he had written: If the old account resurfaces, ask June what happened in 2008.

June had always called 2008 "the bad year." Evelyn remembered medical bills, a bitter dispute with a subcontractor, and Paul working weekends until his hands shook.

When June arrived safely at the station, she took off her coat and told the truth. Paul had loaned fifty thousand dollars to a young worker named Martin Bell, who was trying to keep his family from losing its home. Martin died years later. His nephew Derek had spent the past year claiming Paul owed the Bell family a share of a construction settlement.

"Did he?" Ryan asked.

"No," June said. "Martin signed a full repayment agreement. Paul kept a copy in those basement notebooks. Derek knows that."

Mara pointed to a line in the ledger: ACCOUNT SETTLED. Under it was a date and a witness signature from June.

"Then Derek wants the proof gone," Ryan said.

"He wants a story nobody can contradict," Mara corrected.

Natalie stared at the page. Derek had never mentioned an old loan. He had said he was doing her a favor because Colin knew him.

Torres returned with news. The sedan had been spotted near the lakeside motel, but Derek had left before officers arrived. They found one open suitcase, children's snack wrappers, and a torn page from a notebook.

It was a drawing Elsie had made. The child had written beneath it: I'M WITH DAD. THE BLUE HOUSE HAS A BELL.

Ryan looked at Evelyn. "There are a hundred blue houses around the lake."

Evelyn knew only one with an old brass bell over the door.

"Not a house," she said. "The boat club."
