Chapter 13 - A Line Ryan Could Not Cross

Ryan wanted to drive to the lake and find Derek himself. Evelyn caught his sleeve before he reached the door.

"No," she said.

"He photographed me. He's threatening you."

"And now he wants you angry enough to do something stupid."

Mara reported the threat and secured the envelope. Ryan paced the hallway until his phone rang. It was his largest customer, a school district facilities manager.

"We received a complaint," the man said. "Someone says your insurance documents were fabricated. Until we verify them, we have to suspend your contract."

"My insurance is current. I'll send it right now."

"Please do. I'm sorry, Ryan."

He ended the call and stared at the ceiling. A suspended contract could sink his small business. Derek had found exactly where to press.

Natalie approached with two coffees. "I can explain to the district."

"No more explaining on my behalf," he said. "Not without asking."

She set the cups down. "Fair."

It was the first time all week she hadn't argued with a boundary.

Evelyn spoke with the district's legal department through Mara, providing only what was necessary to verify the real documents. She refused Ryan's offer to pay for the lawyer with money he didn't have.

"I'm not buying your forgiveness," she said. "I'm protecting my name."

That evening the family gathered in a hotel conference room. Colin apologized for introducing Derek, but Brooke had something harder to admit.

"I posted the porch video," she said. "It went up before Ryan asked me to stop."

Ryan stared at her.

"I took it down. Somebody already copied it. People are calling your mom a monster."

Evelyn looked at the phone as strangers described her without knowing her. She could take insults. She could not bear seeing Paul's home turned into a stage.

"Post a correction," Ryan said.

Brooke swallowed. "The truth is going to make Natalie look bad."

"The lie is making Mom look bad," he replied.

Natalie reached for the phone herself. "Give it to me. I'll say what I did."

Before she could record, an email arrived from an attorney representing Owen Price: NOTICE OF EMERGENCY EVICTION PROCEEDINGS.

The notice named Evelyn as an unlawful occupant of her own house.
