Chapter 16 - The Witness

Harold Voss had worked with Paul on the cabin renovation. He was also a recovering alcoholic who remembered 2008 in painful pieces. Evelyn knew his name but had not seen him since the funeral.

"Paul sold the cabin to pay for treatment," Harold began. "That's true. But Owen arranged a second private offer, one that would have paid more if Paul signed a false construction invoice. Paul refused."

"Why didn't he report it?" Ryan asked.

"He did. To the bank's compliance office. Owen lost his broker relationship over it."

Harold produced an old letter acknowledging the complaint. Mara compared it to the county records.

"That explains the grudge," she said, "but not how they hoped to claim the current house."

"Derek's family had heard Paul kept every receipt," Harold replied. "They thought destroying the ledger would make Owen's story harder to challenge."

Ryan looked at his mother. "You carried all this alone?"

"I carried what I knew. I didn't know Owen had come back."

Harold's statement helped confirm the pattern, but it also forced Evelyn to face another memory. She had once told Paul to forget the complaint and protect his health. He refused. "If a crooked man can keep the money," he said, "he'll go looking for someone else to take it from."

A few hours later, police detained Owen for questioning in connection with the suspected document fraud. Derek remained missing. The recovered notebook pages and digital messages were being examined; nobody yet knew whether every allegation would result in charges.

Natalie returned to the hotel room to pack. Ryan found her folding the cream puffer jacket she had worn on the porch.

"Where are you going?" he asked.

"To my sister's. I think we need some space."

"I agree."

She blinked at how much that hurt. "Will you ever trust me again?"

"I don't know. If we try, it won't be because we pretend this never happened."

She nodded and zipped the bag.

As Ryan carried it downstairs, a notification flashed on her phone. The sender was Derek.

I have the original ledger. Meet me alone at the Christmas tree lot or it burns.
