Chapter 11 - The Letter He Never Sent

I opened my father’s letter with shaking hands.

Emily,

If you are reading this, then Daniel has pushed farther than I hoped he would.

I stopped.

Daniel stared at the floor.

I kept reading.

I made a mistake. I confronted him instead of you. I thought warning him would make him back off. Instead, he became more careful.

Three months ago, Dad had discovered irregular draws tied to Harbor Ridge. He had also learned that Daniel was asking lenders to treat my trust as if he controlled it through marriage.

Dad quietly replaced his personal guaranty with a subordinated reserve held outside the debt acceleration chain.

He wasn’t exposed.

Daniel had lied.

Again.

The letter continued.

If he ever tries to isolate you financially, remember what your grandfather built into the trust. It was not designed to make you rich. It was designed to make sure nobody could make you small.

I pressed my lips together.

For months, Daniel had told me my father was manipulative.

Maybe Dad was controlling in his own way. Maybe he was terrible at saying what he felt.

But he had seen the danger before I did.

The final paragraph was shorter.

I am sorry I let pride keep me from calling. If you need me, call once. I will come.

Love,

Dad

I folded the letter.

Daniel spoke first. “Your father hates me. Of course he wrote that.”

I looked up.

“You told me he was financially exposed.”

“He was when I last checked.”

“No. Dana said the change was ninety days ago. You claimed five minutes ago that accelerating today would bankrupt him.”

Daniel’s mouth opened.

Closed.

Margaret said, “This is getting needlessly hostile.”

I picked up my phone.

Daniel took a step forward. “Who are you calling?”

“My father.”

His voice sharpened. “Emily, don’t.”

That was all the encouragement I needed.

Dad answered on the first ring.

Neither of us spoke for two seconds.

Then he said, very quietly, “Are you safe?”

My eyes filled before I could stop them.

“Yes.”

“Is Lily with you?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

I heard a car door slam on his end.

“Dad, where are you?”

“Ten minutes away.”

I looked at Charles.

He smiled faintly.

Dad continued, “And Emily?”

May you like

“Yes?”

“Do not press the debt button until I show you what Daniel bought yesterday.”
