Chapter 15 - The Lawyer Who Quit

Martin Bell had represented Daniel for seven years.

I knew him as the quiet man who attended holiday parties, drank one bourbon, and always left before dessert.

He looked ten years older than the last time I had seen him.

Daniel stood. “What the hell does ‘former’ mean?”

Martin placed his briefcase on the table. “It means I withdrew at 11:07 this morning.”

“On what grounds?”

“Mandatory withdrawal.”

Dana watched him carefully.

Martin looked at me. “Mrs. Mercer, I owe you an apology.”

Daniel stepped forward. “Do not speak to my wife.”

Martin’s eyes hardened. “That sentence is part of the problem.”

He opened the briefcase and removed a flash drive.

“I prepared lawful estate-planning documents based on information Daniel gave me. I did not know the incapacity record was being manufactured. I did not know Emily’s signature had been forged on the bank guarantee.”

Margaret scoffed. “Convenient.”

Martin turned to her. “I also did not know you were using an expired notary seal.”

She went quiet.

Daniel pointed toward the door. “Get out.”

Martin didn’t move.

“I will. After I give Ms. Ruiz material you are entitled to receive under the joint-representation conflict rules.”

Dana accepted the drive.

“What’s on it?” I asked.

Martin looked sick.

“A recording.”

Daniel’s face changed.

He knew.

Martin continued. “Two months ago, Daniel came to my office and asked whether a temporary incapacity petition could be used to prevent you from revoking trust support while Harbor Ridge refinanced.”

“I said that would require genuine medical evidence.”

He looked at Daniel.

“Daniel asked what would happen if the evidence already existed.”

My skin went cold.

Dana plugged the drive into her laptop.

A file appeared.

OFFICE CONFERENCE - APRIL 17.

Martin said, “I record client conferences when authorized. Daniel signed the engagement disclosure years ago.”

Daniel moved for the laptop.

Dad stepped between them.

No one touched anyone.

No one needed to.

Dana clicked play.

Daniel’s recorded voice filled the room.

“If Emily’s therapist won’t say she’s unstable, can we use something from the pediatrician? Sleep deprivation? Anxiety? Anything that gets me sixty days?”

My breath stopped.

Then Martin’s recorded voice asked the question that changed everything.

“Sixty days for what?”

May you like

Daniel answered:

“To move the assets before she understands what she owns.”
