Chapter 3 - The Signature

The document was six pages long.
I had read it at 2:14 that morning while Lily slept beside me.
PETITION FOR TEMPORARY FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP.
It claimed I was overwhelmed after childbirth, emotionally unstable, prone to reckless purchases, and unable to manage family assets responsibly.
The examples were almost insulting.
A $186 pediatric bill.
A $92 order of formula.
A $340 car-seat upgrade recommended after a recall.
Then there was the signature.
Mine.
Except I had never signed it.
Daniel stood across from me now, hands in his pockets.
“You’re misunderstanding legal language.”
“Am I?”
“Yes.”
“So explain why my name is on a petition I never saw.”
Margaret cut in. “It was protective planning.”
I turned toward her. “Protective for whom?”
“For Lily.”
I looked at the baby in my arms.
“Interesting. Because the same week you filed it, my card stopped buying her formula.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Lower your voice.”
“My voice is low.”
That seemed to bother him more.
He preferred tears. Tears could be dismissed. Anger could be called irrational. Calm required answers.
He moved closer.
“You’ve been under pressure. My attorney recommended temporary controls.”
“Your attorney?”
“Our attorney.”
“No. Your attorney.”
Margaret folded her arms. “This is exactly the kind of hostility we were worried about.”
I looked back at the laptop.
The trust had a clause my grandfather insisted on after watching one of his sisters lose almost everything to a controlling husband.
If any spouse, guardian, or agent attempted to seize control of a beneficiary’s personal assets through fraud, coercion, or incapacity claims, the trustee could restore full access immediately.
And if the spouse had benefited from loans guaranteed by the trust, those loans could be called due.
Daniel had borrowed against three companies.
I had signed nothing.
My trust had guaranteed everything.
He just never thought I knew.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Charles Hayes appeared.
