Chapter 4 - The Four-Point-Eight Million Dollar Lie

I didn’t react.

That took effort.

Daniel was watching my face now.

“What?” he asked.

“Nothing.”

“Who texted you?”

“Why?”

“Because I asked.”

There it was.

Not concern. Ownership.

I put the phone face down.

Daniel turned to Margaret. “Mom, give us a minute.”

She didn’t move.

“Now.”

Margaret’s eyes narrowed, but she walked toward the hall.

When she was gone, Daniel lowered his voice.

“Emily, this doesn’t have to become ugly.”

I almost admired the sentence.

He had forged my name, frozen my cards, and filed a legal document implying I couldn’t manage my own life.

But ugliness, apparently, would begin if I objected.

“What’s the $4.8 million guarantee?” I asked.

The color left his face.

Just for a second.

Then he recovered. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

I held his gaze.

He looked away first.

That was new.

I opened the banking portal and clicked into a file Charles had uploaded.

There it was.

A financing agreement between Harbor Ridge Development LLC and Northern Atlantic Bank.

Borrower: Daniel Mercer.

Personal support: Emily Vance Mercer Dynasty Trust.

Signature: Emily Vance Mercer.

Not mine.

The date was six weeks after Lily was born.

On that date, I had been in the hospital with mastitis and a fever of 103.

“I was admitted to St. Matthew’s when this was signed,” I said.

Daniel rubbed the back of his neck. “The deal had a deadline.”

My stomach turned.

“You’re admitting it?”

“I’m saying you would have signed if you were well.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I know you’re my wife.”

“That’s not the same thing as being your collateral.”

His voice hardened. “Everything I built was for this family.”

I looked around the mansion.

The house had been purchased through a holding company partially funded by my trust.

The club membership came from my family.

The art on the walls had belonged to my grandmother.

Even the polished table where he had placed my five-hundred-dollar allowance had been bought with money he called “ours” when he spent it and “mine” when I needed it.

My phone buzzed again.

Charles: DO NOT PRESS ACCELERATION YET.

A second message followed.

WE JUST FOUND WHO NOTARIZED THE FORGED GUARANTEE.

May you like

The name appeared beneath it.

MARGARET MERCER.
