Chapter 1 - Your House?

The cigarette touched my sweater before I understood that Ryan was not going to stop his father.
Heat punched through the navy cashmere stretched over my six-month pregnant belly. I jerked backward, but Ryan had both my wrists pinned behind me.
“Stop fighting, Claire,” he hissed into my ear. “You embarrassed Dad.”
Grant stood in front of me with the cigarette between two fingers, his face almost calm. That calm scared me more than shouting would have.
“Respect,” he said. “A wife learns it one way or another.”
At the dining table, Diane froze with her champagne glass halfway to her lips. Brooke held her phone with both hands. Neither moved.
My baby kicked.
That tiny movement cut through the panic.
I drove my heel down on Ryan’s foot. His grip loosened just enough. I ripped one wrist free, twisted, and stumbled against the kitchen island.
Ryan cursed. “What the hell is wrong with you?”
I stared at him.
Something inside me went cold.
I raised my phone, photographed the dark scorch mark on my sweater, then pointed the camera at Grant’s cigarette and Ryan standing behind me.
Click.
Grant’s face changed.
“Put that away.”
Click.
I took another picture.
Brooke finally whispered, “Dad, maybe you should—”
“Stay out of it.”
Grant pointed toward the foyer. “Get out of my house.”
The room went silent.
I put one hand over my stomach and looked at the table. White china. Crystal glasses. Prime rib. Flowers. The silver-and-green runner I had ordered from a little shop in Aspen because Diane said it would make the room feel festive.
Then I looked back at Grant.
“Your house?” I asked quietly.
Ryan stepped toward me. “Claire, don’t start.”
I reached for the embroidered runner.
My fingers closed around the fabric.
Diane’s eyes widened. “What are you doing?”
I pulled.
Not hard enough to destroy the table. Just hard enough to shift the centerpiece three inches and expose the small brass key taped underneath the runner.
Grant stared at it.
Ryan stopped breathing.
Brooke lowered her phone.
I peeled the key free.
“You all forgot something,” I said.
Ryan’s face had gone pale.
Because he knew exactly what that key opened.
May you like
And he knew I had just remembered too.
