Chapter 18 - Midnight

The next forty-eight minutes felt like a hostage negotiation with a computer.

Martin’s team contacted Hawthorne.

Hawthorne pretended not to know anything.

Then Martin sent them Madison’s messages.

Suddenly they knew a lot.

Their general counsel joined the call personally.

“We are freezing all internal access associated with Ms. Vale,” he said.

“Too late,” Martin replied. “The money is offshore.”

Detective Bell coordinated with federal contacts. Victor supplied account identifiers. Elena documented the source of funds.

I sat at the conference table watching the clock.

12:00 a.m. Cayman time approached.

Thirty minutes.

Twenty-one.

Thirteen.

My phone lit up with a blocked call.

Martin shook his head.

I answered anyway.

Ryan.

“Claire.”

His voice sounded small.

Not sorry.

Small.

“You violated the no-contact order,” I said.

“I need you to stop this.”

“Stop what?”

“Destroying everything.”

I stared at the clock.

“You forged my name. You stole from my company. You tried to take my home. You planned to threaten me with our child.”

“I was scared.”

“So was I when your father touched a cigarette to my stomach.”

Silence.

Then he said, “I didn’t know he would do that.”

“But you held me.”

Another silence.

“Claire, I loved you.”

The past tense landed perfectly.

“Maybe,” I said. “But not more than you resented me.”

He started crying.

I felt nothing.

That scared me for half a second.

Then I realized numbness was not cruelty.

It was exhaustion.

Ryan whispered, “Madison has the money. If you help me, I can testify against Dad.”

Martin was already recording the call with Bell listening through another line.

I asked, “Where is Madison?”

Ryan hesitated.

“Ryan.”

“She was supposed to fly to Miami tonight.”

“Supposed to?”

“She stopped answering me.”

The clock hit three minutes.

Elena suddenly stood.

“Freeze confirmed.”

Everyone turned.

“The Cayman bank froze the account.”

I exhaled.

Ryan heard it.

“What happened?” he demanded.

I looked at the city through the glass wall.

“Your escape fund just became evidence.”

Then Detective Bell spoke into the phone.

“Mr. Mercer, remain where you are. Officers are on the way.”

Ryan whispered one last sentence before the line cut.

“You still don’t know what Madison has.”
