Chapter 17 - The Doctor Letter

The email came from Lillian Cross.

She wanted immunity before she talked.

Detective Bell told her that was not something I could promise.

She talked anyway.

By afternoon, she was sitting across from investigators with her lawyer.

I was not allowed in the room, but Bell called afterward.

“She says Ryan paid her ten thousand dollars to create an assessment describing you as emotionally unstable and potentially unsafe under extreme stress.”

I laughed bitterly. “Based on one forty-minute meeting?”

“Yes.”

“She knew why?”

“She claims Ryan told her it was for a family court matter and that you had agreed to evaluation.”

“I never did.”

“She admits she never verified that.”

Martin shook his head. “Career-ending stupidity.”

Bell continued. “The letter was drafted but not yet submitted.”

“Good.”

“Better than good. She kept the payment records and texts.”

Another piece fell into place.

For months Ryan had been building a version of me on paper.

Emotional.

Unstable.

Overworked.

Forgetful.

Too pregnant to manage business.

Too stressed to manage a child.

All while smiling beside me at prenatal appointments.

I went to the restroom and threw up.

When I came out, Martin waited by the door.

“I’m fine,” I said.

“You don’t have to keep saying that.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Why?”

“Because everyone else keeps trying to write a different sentence for me.”

He nodded.

That afternoon, a judge issued temporary orders preventing Ryan from transferring marital or business assets and restricting contact with me except through counsel.

Grant remained in custody on separate allegations related to Victor and financial fraud.

Brooke agreed to cooperate.

Diane hired her own attorney.

For the first time in years, the Hart family was no longer moving as one body.

Then Elena called.

“Claire, we found the two million.”

My heart jumped. “Where?”

“Still in the Cayman account, but here’s the problem.”

“What problem?”

“It’s not just Ryan’s account.”

She sent the account registration.

Two names.

RYAN MERCER.

MADISON VALE.

And below them was a scheduled outbound transfer for midnight.

Destination: UNKNOWN TRUST ACCOUNT.

Amount: $1,950,000.
