Chapter 14 - The Bruise

The security footage saved me.

There was no audio, but the sequence was clear: Ryan restraining both wrists, Grant approaching, me struggling, my heel coming down, my escape.

Detective Bell watched it twice.

“That answers that,” he said.

I should have felt relief.

Instead, I felt cold.

If the cameras had not existed, Ryan would have had a bruise and I would have had a story.

And stories are easier to attack than video.

Martin arranged for me to stay in a hotel suite under a different name for the night. I refused at first.

“This is my home.”

“Yes,” he said. “And tonight it’s also an active investigation scene.”

He was right.

I hated him for being right.

At 3:20 a.m., I sat on the edge of a hotel bed staring at the Denver skyline.

The baby kicked again.

I whispered, “I’m sorry.”

Then corrected myself.

“No. I’m not apologizing to you for surviving.”

I opened my laptop.

Forty-seven emails waited.

Most were normal company messages.

Three were not.

My CFO, Elena Park, had written twice.

CLAIRE - CALL ME AS SOON AS YOU SEE THIS.

URGENT: BANK AUTHORIZATION CHANGE ATTEMPT.

I called.

She answered on the first ring.

“Are you safe?”

“Yes.”

“Thank God.”

“What happened?”

“Ryan came to the office Friday.”

My stomach tightened. “Why?”

“He said you were on bed rest and asked me to add him as emergency signatory.”

“And you did?”

“Hell no.”

Despite everything, I smiled.

Elena continued. “He got angry. Said I was disrespecting your marriage. Then yesterday I received a document stating you had resigned as CEO effective January first.”

I stared at the city lights.

“Signed by me?”

“Yes.”

“Forward everything to Martin.”

“Already did.”

I exhaled.

“Claire,” Elena said carefully, “there’s something else.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course there was.

“Ryan met privately with three members of the board last week.”

“Which three?”

She named them.

My pulse jumped.

All three were investors who had pushed for a sale six months earlier.

“What did he offer them?”

“I don’t know.”

Then Elena sent me a photograph taken in the office parking garage.

Ryan.

Madison Vale.

And one of my board members.
