Chapter 12 - The Man Who Cut the Video

Ray met Sofia at her office, not at our house. I joined by video call. His hands never stopped moving.

"Helen said your wife had spells," he told me. "She said the doctors weren't listening and a child would suffer unless we could show a pattern."

"So you recorded my wife in her bedroom?"

"I worked with clips Helen sent. I told her to stop using cameras in private rooms. She told me the clock was in a nursery, not a bedroom. That didn't make it okay."

Ray admitted he had edited Mom's footage, including the seven-second clip, and had warned that removing context would mislead people.

"She said it was for her lawyer," he told us. "Then she posted it."

"Did you keep the originals?" Sofia asked.

Ray nodded. "I kept project files and the copies she sent. I never delete the source folder until a project is closed."

He agreed to preserve the files and talk with investigators about his own work. Sofia arranged a proper transfer of the materials, retaining file dates and the messages that explained how he'd edited them.

There was more. Mom had hired him to scan documents, too. The supposedly signed guardianship packet had been assembled from several files, including a page carrying my actual signature from a home-repair warranty application. He hadn't personally copied my signature onto the authorization, he said, but he'd seen the finished PDF and questioned it.

"Helen told me Adam approved it," he said. "I should have checked."

I had spent my entire life describing Mom as stubborn, opinionated, demanding. None of those words came close to what I was hearing.

When the call ended, Mara was sitting beside me on the couch. She'd heard everything. I reached for her hand and she let me hold it.

"Will the video show what she did?" she asked.

"I hope so."

"I don't," Mara said.

I looked at her, confused.

"I don't want to watch it. I already lived it."

That evening Sofia sent me a secure message. The files had arrived. She'd watched a short section and asked us to come in the next day.

It wasn't the nursery assault that worried her most.

It was a recording from Wednesday night, the thirty-seven minutes Mom said Mara had abandoned our baby.
