Chapter 9 - A Reservation for Three

"How many guests?" I asked the clerk.
"The reservation says one adult and one infant, sir. But the credit card on file was used to guarantee it under your account."
I hadn't booked a hotel in Columbus. I asked them not to change anything over the phone, requested their process for reporting an unauthorized reservation, and hung up. Sofia told us to preserve the details for law enforcement.
"She can't simply claim your child because she filled out forms," Sofia said. "But the apparent travel plan and the threats matter. Don't minimize them."
We changed the locks and shut off Mom's smart-home access. Dana helped us reset passwords. Mara watched me check the nursery window twice.
At four, Mom called from an unfamiliar number. I let it go to voicemail.
"You have until tomorrow to apologize," she said. "That house wouldn't exist without me. I put twenty-eight thousand dollars into your down payment. If you cut me out, I'll take everything back."
The money had been a wedding gift. I still had the card: FOR A SAFE HOME, LOVE MOM. I showed it to Sofia, who told me not to assume a threat was a valid legal claim, and not to argue with Mom about it directly.
Mara stood at the kitchen sink, watching the rain slide down the glass. "If we lose the house, where do we go?"
"We won't let a voicemail decide that," I said.
"That's not what I asked."
I went to her and put my hand on the counter beside hers. For the first time, I said the thing I should have said weeks ago: "If the house becomes unsafe, we leave. We stay together. It's walls, Mara. You're my family."
She turned, searching my face for the familiar hesitation. This time there wasn't any.
Then my supervisor called. The company had received a video showing me knocking an elderly woman to the floor. A client had complained. The clip was spreading through neighborhood pages with the caption: MAN ATTACKS HIS MOTHER WHILE SHE PROTECTS NEWBORN.

My supervisor sounded miserable.
"Adam," he said, "I'm taking you off tomorrow's job until we understand what happened."
