Chapter 3 - The Seven-Second Lie

Mom's video began with my hand on her arm and ended with her falling backward onto the carpet. It didn't show what happened before that.
The younger officer, Patel, watched it twice. Mom narrated each second as if she'd rehearsed it.
"He just lost control. She was hysterical. I was trying to keep the baby safe."
"I'd like to give my statement," I said.
Officer Patel raised a hand. "Everybody gets a turn."
They separated us. Officer Ruiz spoke with Mara while Patel questioned me in the kitchen.
I told him exactly what I'd seen: the hair, the yank, Elsie screaming, my attempt to separate them. I didn't claim to be gentle. I admitted Mom had stumbled when I put myself between her and Mara.
"Did you strike her?" he asked.
"No. I got her hands off Mara."
"Would you be willing to write that down?"
"Every word."
The paramedics arrived. One checked Mom's wrist while another examined Mara's head and neck. The baby calmed as soon as Mara fed her. I watched from the doorway, trying not to stare at the handful of loose hair caught on Mara's hoodie.
Ruiz came back and asked Mom to sit in the living room. "Mrs. Pike, do you live here?"
"Temporarily. My son needs me."
"Are you on the lease or deed?"
"It's a family home."
"That's not what I asked."
Mom's face turned pink. The deed was in my name and Mara's. Mom had helped us with the down payment, but she didn't own the house. She had acted as if those were the same thing since the day we moved in.
Ruiz photographed Mara's injuries with her permission. She asked whether this had happened before. Mara looked at me, then at Mom, who was staring straight at her.
"Yes," Mara said.
The word hit harder than the scene upstairs.
"How many times?" I asked.
Mara's mouth trembled. "I stopped counting."
The officers explained how to seek protection and documented both accounts. Mom was told to stay away from Mara.
I went to retrieve her overnight bag from the guest room. Behind the pillow lay a second phone, its screen lit with missed messages. One preview read: DID YOU GET ENOUGH TO USE?
The sender wasn't saved under a name. Only a number.

Underneath it was another message.
