Chapter 11 - What Their Father Built

Claire spent the next hour refusing to believe Rachel’s last sentence.

Then she remembered the locked steel cabinet in their father’s old study.

After David Mercer died, their mother had sold the family house. Most records went into storage. Claire had never opened the cabinet because the key disappeared.

Rachel apparently had.

Arthur obtained access to the storage facility before noon.

The cabinet was there.

So was the broken lock.

Inside were old tax files, board books, handwritten notebooks, and one empty space shaped exactly like a large ledger.

Claire sat on the concrete floor and opened the first notebook.

Her father’s handwriting filled the pages.

Vendor names.

Dates.

Initials.

Payments.

Arthur crouched beside her. “This looks like a private transaction log.”

Claire turned pages faster.

Then she found Cole Meridian.

Not the modern company.

Its predecessor.

A joint venture her father and Martin Cole had built together before Ethan and Claire were even in college.

Claire stared at a line from 2007.

D.M. - M.C. - emergency reserve - 2.4M.

“What is this?”

Arthur photographed it.

Another notebook referenced “political exposure,” “consultants,” and “cleanup.”

Claire felt sick.

Maybe the blackmail file had been fabricated around something real.

Her phone buzzed.

A text from Rachel.

I’M OK. DON’T TRUST MARTIN.

Then another.

DAD LEFT PROOF IN THE LEDGER. LANE HAS IT.

Claire typed: WHERE ARE YOU?

No reply.

Arthur stood. “We call the FBI.”

Claire nodded.

This was no longer family business.

It was evidence.

Before they could leave, the storage facility manager came running down the aisle.

“Mrs. Cole?”

“Yes?”

“There’s a man at the front desk asking for you.”

Arthur’s hand went immediately to his phone.

“Name?”

“He says he’s your husband.”

Claire’s blood chilled.

Ethan was under instruction from his attorney not to contact her directly.

Arthur said, “Stay here.”

Claire did not.

She followed him to the front.

Ethan stood beyond the security gate, alone, wearing yesterday’s tuxedo shirt under a coat.

He looked exhausted.

When he saw Claire, he raised both hands.

“I’m not here to fight.”

Arthur said, “Then leave.”

Ethan ignored him.

“Claire, Rachel is in danger.”

“You expect me to believe you care?”

“I expect you to believe I’m scared.”

That stopped her.

Ethan looked over his shoulder.

“Robert Lane isn’t working for me anymore.”

Claire’s voice dropped. “Who is he working for?”

May you like

Ethan swallowed.

“My father.”
