Chapter 13 - The Hidden Vault

The vault was beneath Meridian’s original headquarters, a stone building in downtown Boston that the company now used for executive archives and ceremonial meetings.

Ethan claimed only he and Martin knew the access sequence.

Claire believed half of that.

The FBI took over the entry.

By evening, agents, forensic accountants, and company counsel stood in a basement corridor facing a steel door hidden behind old shelving.

Ethan entered the code.

Red light.

He tried again.

Red.

“Dad changed it,” he said.

Agent Ortiz looked at him. “Convenient.”

“I’m telling you the truth.”

Claire folded her arms. “Get used to nobody believing that.”

A locksmith team opened the vault after forty-three minutes.

Inside were backup drives, sealed boxes, old contracts, and paper ledgers.

But not the ledger Rachel had mentioned.

Arthur found something else.

A binder labeled MERCER-COLE CONTINGENCY.

Claire opened it.

The first document was a partnership agreement signed by her father and Martin Cole in 2006.

The second created a private reserve fund controlled jointly by both men.

The third stunned everyone.

It was a succession clause.

If either partner engaged in criminal conduct that materially endangered the company, voting control from that partner’s family trust could be temporarily transferred to the other family pending review.

Claire looked at Ethan.

He looked equally shocked.

Arthur read the clause again.

“Your father never told you?” Claire asked Ethan.

“No.”

Ortiz asked, “Who currently controls the Mercer trust?”

Claire answered, “I do.”

“And the Cole family trust?”

Ethan’s face changed.

“My father.”

Claire understood immediately.

If evidence proved Martin was involved in criminal conduct, Claire might gain temporary voting control over his family’s shares.

Enough to control Meridian outright.

Arthur said quietly, “That gives Martin a powerful motive to bury anything connecting him to wrongdoing.”

Ethan whispered, “And a motive to make it look like me.”

Then an agent at the back of the vault called out.

“We found a phone.”

It was an old prepaid device taped beneath a shelf.

The battery still worked.

There were only three saved contacts.

LANE.

M.C.

RACHEL.

Claire’s heart pounded.

Ortiz opened the message history.

The most recent text had been sent twelve minutes earlier.

It came from Rachel.

I HAVE THE LEDGER. IF YOU WANT IT, COME ALONE.

The response beneath it was even worse.

ON MY WAY.
