Chapter 9 - The File With Her Name

Inside the envelope were bank records, photographs, and a typed summary.

The summary accused Claire’s late father, David Mercer, of using a charity foundation to hide illegal payments twenty years earlier.

Claire read the first page twice.

“This is garbage.”

Martin said, “I hoped so.”

“You threatened to protect Ethan because of this?”

“I didn’t know if it was true.”

“So you chose your son over finding out.”

His face tightened.

Claire flipped through the records.

Then she stopped.

Arthur saw it too.

A routing number was wrong.

Not obviously wrong. Just historically impossible.

Arthur took the page. “This bank didn’t use this routing structure until after the merger in 2012.”

The document was dated 2004.

Claire felt her anger sharpen.

“Fabricated.”

Martin looked sick.

Arthur examined the photographs. “Some may be real. Context could be false.”

Claire pulled out her phone and photographed every page.

“Who delivered it?”

“Courier.”

“Name?”

“Fake.”

“Security footage?”

“Deleted.”

Arthur looked at Martin. “Convenient.”

Martin snapped, “I’m not your enemy.”

Claire met his eyes. “You helped forge my authorization six times.”

He had no answer.

On the drive back, Nora called.

“We found something in the hotel security footage.”

Arthur put her on speaker.

“The person who tried Madison’s door was wearing a cap, but there’s a partial reflection in the elevator mirror. We ran it against the ballroom arrival footage.”

Claire asked, “And?”

Nora hesitated.

“It looks like Robert Lane.”

Arthur went still.

Claire knew the name.

Robert Lane was Meridian’s chief security officer.

Former state police. Twenty years in corporate investigations. Ethan’s most trusted fixer.

Claire said, “Can you confirm?”

“Not yet. But there’s more. Lane used his company badge at headquarters at 2:58 a.m.”

Thirteen minutes before Ethan’s access had been reactivated.

Claire looked at Arthur.

“So Lane took the drive.”

“Maybe.”

Then Nora said, “Claire, you need to hear the last part.”

“What?”

“Lane didn’t leave headquarters alone.”

Arthur’s grip tightened around his phone.

Nora continued.

“The garage camera shows him getting into a car with someone.”

May you like

“Who?”

“Your sister.”
