Chapter 16 - Control

By Monday morning, every major corporate lawyer in Boston seemed to know Claire Mercer Cole’s name.

The amendment was authentic.

So was the original succession clause.

After an emergency court hearing, the judge granted temporary enforcement pending a full ownership review.

The result was immediate.

Claire now controlled fifty-eight percent of Meridian’s voting rights.

Not forever.

Not yet.

But long enough to call a board meeting.

Ethan sat across from her in the same executive conference room where he had once told her not to “worry her pretty head” about operating decisions.

This time he said nothing.

Claire opened the meeting.

“Effective immediately, Martin Cole is suspended from all board authority pending investigation.”

No one objected.

“Robert Lane is terminated for cause.”

Silence.

“Ethan Cole remains on leave.”

Ethan finally looked up.

“You said you believed I didn’t know about Beacon.”

“I said I believed you may not have known where that payment went.”

“That’s not the same thing.”

“No. It isn’t.”

She slid a packet toward him.

“You still authorized false vendor structures. You still moved debt off the books. You still signed things you didn’t understand because your father told you to.”

He stared at the packet.

“And you hit me.”

The room became perfectly still.

Claire did not raise her voice.

“You don’t get to make that a footnote because bigger crimes happened around us.”

Ethan’s face reddened.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

He had no answer.

The board voted unanimously to appoint an interim chief executive from outside the family.

For the first time in almost sixty years, no Cole ran Meridian.

Afterward, Madison approached Claire in the hallway.

“I’m cooperating with the government.”

“I know.”

“I also resigned.”

Claire nodded.

Madison looked ashamed. “I knew Ethan was married. I knew what I was doing there. I’m not going to pretend I was innocent about that.”

Claire appreciated the sentence more than any apology.

Madison continued, “But there’s something else.”

Claire almost laughed from exhaustion. “There is always something else.”

Madison handed her a sealed envelope.

“I found this in Ethan’s apartment.”

Claire looked at her.

“You were in his apartment?”

Madison’s face tightened. “That’s not the important part.”

Claire opened the envelope.

Inside was a signed agreement dated six months earlier.

Ethan had promised Madison ten million dollars.
