Chapter 1 - The Pillow

The first thing Evelyn Hart saw was the pillow.

Not the monitors. Not the IV line. Not the faint purple bruise beneath her daughter’s eye.

The pillow.

It was pressed over Claire’s face by the man who had promised, eight years earlier, to protect her.

“Daddy?” six-year-old Lily whispered beside him.

Evelyn’s husband, Richard Hart, froze in the doorway with their granddaughter’s tiny hand in his. Claire was eight months pregnant, twisting weakly beneath the white hospital blanket. Her husband, Grant Mercer, leaned over her with both hands on the pillow. Vanessa Reed stood beside the bed in a deep burgundy dress, watching with a tight little smile.

For half a second, nobody moved.

Then Richard let go of Lily’s hand.

“Get away from my daughter.”

Grant jerked around. “This isn’t what it looks like.”

Richard crossed the room before the sentence was finished. He grabbed Grant by the shoulder and hauled him backward. The pillow dropped to the floor.

Claire sucked in air so sharply it sounded like a sob.

“Mommy!” Lily cried.

Grant shoved Richard’s arm away. “She was panicking. I was trying to calm her down.”

“With a pillow?” Richard snapped.

Vanessa stepped forward. “Mr. Hart, you need to understand—”

Richard hit Grant once. One short punch. Grant staggered into the chair beside the bed.

“Stay away from my daughter!”

Lily ran to the wall and slapped the large red emergency button.

An alarm screamed through the room.

Vanessa lunged toward Richard. “You idiot! Do you know what you’ve done?”

He turned, blocked her hand, and shoved her back just enough to create space.

Hospital staff rushed through the doorway, followed seconds later by security and two uniformed officers who had been stationed downstairs after an unrelated call.

“Everybody freeze!” one officer shouted.

Claire pushed herself upright, breathing hard. “Lily.”

The little girl climbed carefully onto the edge of the mattress. Claire wrapped one arm around her and buried her face in her daughter’s hair.

Grant pointed at Richard. “He attacked me.”

Claire lifted her head.

Her voice was barely more than a rasp.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

Claire’s hazel eyes locked on the officer nearest the bed.

“My husband tried to kill me.”

Grant’s face changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

As if he had been waiting for her to say those exact words.

Then he smiled.

May you like

“Ask her what she did last night.”
