Chapter 2 - What Happened Last Night

The room went quiet except for the monitor beside Claire’s bed.
Officer Dana Collins looked from Grant to Claire. “What happened last night?”
Claire’s hand tightened around Lily’s shoulder.
Grant answered first. “She tried to leave the hospital. She was confused. She attacked Vanessa in the parking garage.”
“That’s a lie,” Claire said.
Vanessa touched her cheek dramatically, though there was no mark there. “Claire, you chased me down the stairs.”
Richard took one step toward her. “Careful.”
“Dad,” Claire whispered.
He stopped.
Officer Collins raised a hand. “Nobody else talks. Mrs. Mercer, I need your version.”
Claire looked at Lily. “Sweetheart, can you go with Grandpa for a minute?”
Lily shook her head so hard her hair swung across her face. “No.”
“I’m not leaving either,” Richard said.
Claire closed her eyes. “Last night, Grant told me he wanted to talk about the baby. He said he was sorry. He brought me tea.”
Grant scoffed. “Here we go.”
“I drank half of it,” Claire continued. “Ten minutes later, I could barely stand.”
Officer Collins’s expression sharpened.
Claire swallowed. “I remember Vanessa coming in. I remember them arguing about whether I had signed something.”
“What thing?”
“I don’t know.”
Grant laughed once. “Because it never happened.”
Claire turned her head toward him. “Then why is my signature on a transfer form I never saw?”
Vanessa’s smile vanished.
Richard looked at his daughter. “What transfer form?”
Claire pointed toward the rolling bedside table. “My phone. In the blue case.”
A nurse picked it up and handed it to Officer Collins. Claire gave the passcode.
“There’s a photo in my favorites,” she said. “I took it at three twelve this morning when they thought I was asleep.”
Collins opened the image.
Her face changed instantly.
Richard leaned closer.
The photograph showed a document on the foot of the hospital bed. At the bottom was Claire’s name. Above it was language transferring temporary control of the Hart Family Trust to Grant Mercer in the event Claire was declared medically incapacitated.
Grant’s jaw tightened.
“That proves nothing,” he said.
Officer Collins zoomed in.
“No,” she said quietly. “But this does.”
