Chapter 19 - Warehouse 7

Richard insisted on going with police.
Claire insisted he wear a vest.
“Dad, if you ignore me, I will personally get out of this bed and drag you back.”
He kissed her forehead. “You sound exactly like your mother.”
Warehouse 7 had been empty for years, a forgotten property near the river awaiting redevelopment.
Police surrounded it before dawn.
Inside, they found Grant.
He was alone.
No weapon in his hands.
No hostages.
Just a chair, a laptop, and dozens of paper files spread across a folding table.
Bell entered with Richard behind the tactical team.
Grant smiled when he saw his father-in-law.
“I knew you’d come.”
Richard said nothing.
Grant tapped the laptop. “Everything your wife collected on me is here.”
“Marianne?”
“She was smarter than Claire.”
Richard’s fists clenched.
Bell said, “Hands on your head.”
Grant ignored him. “You want to know who ordered the crash?”
Richard stared at him.
Grant smiled. “It wasn’t me.”
“Hands. Now.”
“It was Samuel Vale.”
Bell stepped closer.
Grant continued. “Marianne found his billing scheme. She was going to expose him. I helped cover records afterward, yes. I was a coward. But I didn’t order the accident.”
Richard’s voice was low. “You used the same plan on my daughter.”
Grant looked toward him. “Because it worked.”
That sentence nearly broke Richard’s control.
Bell moved between them.
Grant lifted both hands.
“Fine.”
He was handcuffed without resistance.
On the laptop, police found a recorded call made years earlier between Samuel Vale and Daniel Cross discussing Marianne’s route.
It did not absolve Grant. It made the conspiracy larger.
As officers led him outside, Grant leaned toward Richard.
“Claire will never forgive you for keeping the letter.”
Richard met his eyes.
“She doesn’t have to forgive me today.”
Grant frowned.
Richard continued, “She just has to be alive to decide.”
At the hospital, Claire received a final message from Nina Patel.
Grant is back in custody. No bail.
Claire closed her eyes.
Then another message arrived.
From an unknown number.
One sentence.
