Chapter 16 - The Hearing

The hearing took place in a secure hospital conference room because Claire’s doctor refused to discharge her.
The judge appeared by video.
Grant sat at the far end of the room in restraints, wearing a navy suit and the same calm expression he had worn at charity dinners, school events, and family photographs.
Claire hated how normal he looked.
His attorney began by describing her as emotional, suspicious, unstable, and influenced by her father.
Then Nina Patel stood.
“Your Honor, the petitioner is asking this court to trust documents his own associates are accused of falsifying.”
Grant’s attorney objected.
The judge overruled him.
Nina played the edited recording.
Then the original.
Grant’s face tightened.
Next came hospital access logs, the unauthorized sedative removal, the forged incapacity form, the guardianship draft, and photographs from Warehouse 6.
Then Megan testified.
“I should have told my sister about the affair,” she said through tears. “I was afraid. Grant used that fear.”
Grant leaned toward his attorney and whispered urgently.
The judge asked, “Mr. Mercer, do you wish to testify?”
His attorney said no.
Grant said yes.
The attorney turned toward him in shock.
Grant stood.
For twenty minutes, he presented himself as the exhausted husband of a paranoid wife. He called the pillow incident a misunderstanding. He claimed Vanessa and Tracy had conspired to blame him after stealing company money.
Then Nina cross-examined him.
“Did you create the document titled PHASE TWO - AFTER DELIVERY?”
“No.”
“Did you know about Warehouse 6?”
“No.”
“Did you ever threaten Megan Hart?”
“No.”
“Did you alter the recording we heard today?”
“No.”
Nina nodded.
Then she placed one final device on the table.
A small home security hub recovered from the Mercer kitchen.
Grant’s face changed.
Claire noticed immediately.
Nina did too.
“Mr. Mercer,” she said, “did you know your smart-home system automatically stored voice commands for thirty days?”
Grant did not answer.
Nina pressed play.
His voice filled the room.
Vanessa, if Claire fights the guardianship, we move to the hospital plan. Dad says the chart work is already done.
Silence.
Then another sentence.
And if she still won’t sign, Lily becomes leverage.
The judge stared at Grant.
Grant stared at Claire.
Then he mouthed four words.
