Chapter 11 - Behind the Green Door

At 8:15 the next morning, police opened the greenhouse under warrant.

Claire stood behind the yellow line with Martin and Evelyn while technicians photographed the green door before touching it.

The old paint had faded to the color of stormy glass.

Evelyn looked at it and began to cry.

"Your father loved this place."

Claire kept her eyes on the lock.

"What did you take?"

Evelyn wiped her face.

"A ledger."

"Where is it?"

"Safe."

"You keep saying that."

"Because every time I tried to bring it forward, someone found me."

The police opened the door.

Behind it was not a room.

It was a narrow stairway leading underground.

Claire felt Martin tense beside her.

"You knew?"

"No."

The basement smelled of soil and old paper. Metal shelves lined the walls. Most were empty.

At the center stood a worktable beneath a dusty hanging lamp.

On it sat a tape recorder.

A real one. Analog. Old-fashioned.

Officer Nolan pressed play.

Samuel Bennett's voice filled the room.

Claire had prepared herself to hear him.

She had not prepared herself to be nine years old again in one breath.

"If Claire is hearing this, then I was right to be afraid."

Her throat closed.

The recording continued.

Samuel described Vale Capital's scheme: acquiring development intelligence, manipulating land values, coercing owners, and using marriages and private debt to gain leverage over family-controlled companies.

Then he named Vivian.

Then Ethan's father, George Cole, who had died two years before Samuel.

Then Richard Vale.

And finally he said something that made Claire grip the table.

"Ethan Cole is not part of this as of today. He is twenty-six. He may still choose differently."

Claire closed her eyes.

Her father had left Ethan a door out.

Ethan had closed it himself.

The tape clicked.

Then Samuel's voice returned.

"The code is not a phrase. It is a question only Claire can answer."

A pause.

"Claire, what did you call the green door when you were a child?"

Claire's breath caught.

She remembered.

She used to call it the dragon door because the peeling paint looked like scales.

"The dragon door," she whispered.

Martin typed the words into the trust portal.

The screen changed.

ACCESS GRANTED.

A hidden archive opened.

Hundreds of files appeared.

And at the top was one folder dated the day Samuel died.

Its title was: ETHAN COLE - FINAL MEETING.
