Chapter 12 - Ethan’s Final Meeting

The folder contained an audio file.

Claire listened to it in a police interview room with her hands locked together under the table.

Her father's voice came first.

"Sit down, Ethan."

Then Ethan, younger but unmistakable.

"Claire doesn't know I'm here."

"Good. For once, we're protecting her from the same thing."

Claire's eyes burned.

Samuel laid out what he knew about Vale's bailout of Cole Development and Vivian's private agreements.

Ethan sounded stunned.

"My mother said Vale was an investor."

"He's a creditor who collects people."

"What do you want from me?"

"Walk away from their plan. Marry my daughter only if you love her more than you love what she owns."

There was a long silence.

Then Ethan said, "I do love her."

Samuel answered, "Then prove it when it costs you something."

The recording ended fifteen minutes later.

No threats. No deal.

A choice.

Claire sat back.

For years she had told herself that betrayal must come from a lack of love.

The recording taught her something worse.

Ethan may have loved her.

He had simply loved power more.

Officer Nolan entered.

"His attorney wants to discuss cooperation."

Claire laughed once.

"Of course he does."

"You don't have to see him."

"I want to."

Ethan was brought in without cuffs at the table but with an officer outside the door. He looked as if he had aged five years overnight.

"Claire."

"Don't say my name like it's a defense."

He looked down.

"I didn't know my mother was going to hit you."

"But you knew she was going to confront me."

Silence.

"And you disabled the camera?"

"I thought I did."

"Why?"

"She wanted to scare you into signing."

Claire stared at him.

"You helped plan intimidation."

"I thought it would be words."

"You hid forged papers in a drawer."

"Vale had us trapped."

"Us?"

"My mother took loans against Cole Development. More than the company could carry. Vale said if we didn't secure Bennett assets, he'd call the debt and destroy everything."

Claire leaned forward.

"So you decided to destroy me instead."

Ethan's eyes filled.

"I kept trying to find another way."

"For how many years?"

He did not answer.

Claire knew the number.

Six.

Then Ethan whispered, "There's something you still don't know."

"I'm getting tired of that sentence."

"The forged transfer wasn't the real plan."

Claire felt the room go cold.

"What was?"

May you like

Ethan looked toward the door.

"To have you declared temporarily incompetent."
