Chapter 5 - The Guest Upstairs

Martin Hale had represented the Bennett family for twenty-nine years.
He was seventy-one, soft-spoken, careful, and famous for remembering the exact wording of contracts signed decades earlier.
He was also Claire's godfather.
She found him in the upstairs library pouring himself two fingers of bourbon while police moved through the rooms below.
"Martin."
His hand stopped.
He did not turn around.
"I was wondering when you'd come up."
That answer chilled her.
"Why did my father change my trust three days before he died?"
Martin set down the bottle.
"Who told you that?"
"Ethan."
Now he turned.
"Then Ethan knows too much."
"That isn't an answer."
Martin looked older than he had at dinner. Not frightened exactly. Tired in a way Claire had never seen.
"Your father created a failsafe."
"Against what?"
"Against the Cole family acquiring controlling rights over Bennett Development through marriage, transfer, incapacity, or coercion."
Claire stared at him.
"He wrote Ethan into a failsafe?"
"He wrote everyone into it. Including me."
Martin crossed to an antique desk and unlocked the bottom drawer.
Inside was a steel document case.
Claire's pulse quickened.
"How long has that been here?"
"Since before your wedding."
"In Ethan's house?"
"Your father believed the safest place to hide something was where the people looking for it felt they already had control."
Martin opened the case.
Inside were photocopies of bank transfers, corporate registries, internal Cole Development memos, and a sealed letter with Claire's name on it.
Her handwriting trembled as she picked it up.
The envelope said: CLAIRE - ONLY IF THEY FORCE YOUR HAND.
"They?"
Martin nodded.
"Your father believed Richard Vale and Vivian Cole were building a private acquisition network. Distressed companies. Friendly board members. Forged shareholder consents when necessary. He could never prove enough to stop them."
"Richard Vale?"
Claire knew the name. Everyone in New York real estate knew it.
A billionaire financier who rarely appeared in public and never seemed to lose money.
"What does he have to do with Ethan?"
Martin's answer came slowly.
"Richard Vale paid off Cole Development's debt seven years ago."
"Before Ethan proposed to me."
"Nine days before."
Claire felt the room tilt.
Martin handed her one of the bank records.
Forty million dollars.
Vale Capital to Cole Development Holdings.
The date was unmistakable.
She whispered, "My marriage was collateral."
"Your father thought so."
Claire tore open the sealed letter.
The first line was in Samuel Bennett's blunt handwriting.
Claire, if you are reading this, Ethan has chosen them over you.
She stopped breathing for a moment.
Then footsteps came fast in the hallway.
Officer Nolan entered.
"Mrs. Cole, we have a problem."
May you like
"What?"
"Your mother-in-law is gone."
