Chapter 3 - The Hidden Feed

The second camera was not part of the home's regular security system.
It had been installed inside the decorative molding above Ethan's study door.
The feed went to a private cloud account registered under a company Claire had never heard of: Graystone Residential Analytics.
"Who owns Graystone?" Officer Nolan asked.
Ethan stared at the floor.
Vivian answered for him. "A vendor."
"Vendor for what?"
"Security."
Claire watched Nolan's expression change by half a degree.
"Then why is it recording only Mrs. Cole's movements?"
Silence.
The technician brought up a timeline.
Hundreds of clips.
Claire entering the study.
Claire opening the safe.
Claire signing birthday cards.
Claire writing checks to the household staff.
Claire speaking on the phone with her attorney.
Claire practicing her signature on a stack of foundation thank-you letters.
Her stomach turned.
"You've been filming me."
Ethan finally looked at her. "It wasn't like that."
"What is it like when your husband secretly records your handwriting?"
"I was protecting the family."
"From me?"
Vivian snapped, "From your father."
Claire went still.
Her father, Samuel Bennett, had been dead for four years.
He had never trusted the Coles.
At the time, Claire had thought it was pride. Two wealthy families competing over old reputations and newer money.
A week before Claire's wedding, her father had taken her into his library and said, Ethan loves access more than he loves comfort. Never confuse the two.
She had been furious with him.
Now those words returned with perfect clarity.
Officer Nolan asked, "What did Samuel Bennett have to do with this?"
Vivian realized too late that she had opened a door.
"Nothing."
Claire stepped closer.
"You said his name."
"I misspoke."
"You never misspeak."
Ethan stood, hands cuffed in front now while police sorted out the assault complaint and the suspected forged documents. His voice dropped.
"Claire, there are things your father did that you don't know about."
"Then tell me."
"Not here."
"You don't get to choose the room anymore."
He closed his eyes.
Then a phone began ringing.
Not Claire's.
Not Ethan's.
Not Vivian's.
The sound came from inside the wall beside the emergency button.
Everyone turned.
The technician removed the red button's outer panel.
Behind it was a cheap prepaid phone taped to the wiring box.
Its screen showed one incoming call.
UNKNOWN.
Officer Nolan answered on speaker.
A man's voice said, "Is it done?"
May you like
Nobody moved.
Then the voice added, "Did Claire sign the transfer?"
