Chapter 16 - My Father’s Name

I stopped breathing.

My father, Samuel Bennett, had died when I was nineteen.

Car accident.

Rainy road. Bad turn. Open-and-shut.

That was what I had always been told.

Richard’s recording continued.

“Samuel Bennett was the city inspector assigned to the Riverside redevelopment. He refused Kessler’s payment and kept copies of every altered inspection report.”

My hands began to shake.

Daniel reached for me.

I pulled away without meaning to.

Richard continued.

“When Samuel died, I should have gone to the police. I was afraid. I was also guilty of staying silent too long. That silence protected Peter.”

The video paused for a moment as Richard coughed.

Then he said, “Grace does not know any of this.”

I whispered, “No.”

Lawson looked stunned.

Michael stared at the floor.

Richard went on.

“I put the house in Grace’s control because Samuel once saved me from becoming the kind of man Peter wanted me to be. If I cannot repair what I helped hide, perhaps protecting his daughter is the closest thing to an apology I can offer.”

I stood so fast the chair scraped backward.

Daniel rose too.

“Grace—”

“I need air.”

I walked into the empty hallway outside the conference room.

For nineteen years, my father’s death had been one terrible accident.

Now it had a name attached to it.

Peter Kessler.

A detective came toward us from the elevator.

He looked serious.

“Mrs. Hale?”

“Yes.”

“We reviewed archived records involving your father’s crash.”

My throat tightened.

“What did you find?”

“The original responding officer filed a supplemental note that never made it into the final report.”

Daniel moved beside me.

The detective held out a copy.

Witness reported a black sedan leaving scene seconds after impact.

Partial plate: 7KX.

The detective looked at me.

“Councilman Kessler owned a black sedan that year.”

He turned the page.

My father had been a practical man who kept receipts in labeled envelopes and checked the smoke detector batteries on the first Saturday of every month. The idea that he had quietly gathered evidence against powerful people fit him in a way that hurt. He would have been terrified. He would have done it anyway.

“Plate ended in 7KX.”
