Chapter 6 - The Doctor

I read the statement twice.

It said I suffered from episodes of confusion, paranoia, and emotional instability.

None of it was true.

The signature belonged to Dr. Natalie Pierce, my primary care physician for five years.

Daniel took out his phone.

“I’m calling her.”

Margaret moved toward the door. “This is ridiculous.”

Lawson blocked her path with one arm. “Stay.”

She glared at him. “You can’t detain me.”

“No. But if you leave, I’ll assume you’re destroying evidence.”

Daniel put the call on speaker.

Dr. Pierce answered on the third ring.

“Daniel? Is Grace okay?”

I leaned toward the phone. “Did you sign a statement saying I’m mentally unfit?”

Silence.

Then: “What?”

I sent her a photo.

Twenty seconds later, she swore under her breath.

“That is not my signature.”

Margaret’s shoulders stiffened.

Dr. Pierce continued. “Grace, I never wrote this. I have never diagnosed you with anything like that.”

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Who filed it?”

Margaret smiled without humor. “Ask your wife. Maybe she forged that too.”

I stepped toward her. “You forged my name. You forged Richard’s. Now you forged a doctor.”

“Prove it.”

The words were so cold, so confident, that everyone went quiet.

That was when Lawson opened the final folder.

Inside was a printout from the home security company.

Richard had ordered hidden backup cameras installed in the study and foyer before his death.

Margaret stared at the paper.

“No.”

Lawson nodded. “Cloud archive. Separate account.”

Daniel looked toward the ceiling.

I thought of the slap.

The pushing.

The suitcases.

Everything.

Lawson typed a password into his laptop.

A list of video files appeared.

The newest file had today’s date.

But there was another file beneath it.

Recorded three nights ago.

At 2:14 in the morning.

A thumbnail showed Margaret standing in Richard’s study.

She wasn’t alone.

Dr. Pierce's voice steadied once she understood we were recording the call. She repeated every denial clearly and gave Lawson permission to preserve the message for investigators. Margaret watched the phone the way people watch a door they suddenly realize is locked from the other side.

The man beside her was Daniel’s younger brother, Evan.
