Chapter 7 - Evan

Daniel’s face went still.
“Play it.”
The video began without sound for the first few seconds.
Margaret entered the study carrying a folder. Evan followed her.
Evan was thirty-four, charming when he wanted money, invisible when anyone needed help. He had spent most of Richard’s funeral greeting investors instead of grieving.
On the recording, Margaret opened a drawer and handed him several documents.
Then the audio came through.
Evan’s voice: “If Grace signs, we’re clear.”
Margaret: “She won’t sign.”
“Then get her out.”
“What about Daniel?”
“He’ll believe whatever makes the marriage look like a mistake.”
Daniel flinched.
Evan continued, “You’ve trained him his whole life to doubt himself. Use it.”
I looked at Daniel.
That sentence hurt him more than anything else.
Margaret lunged for the laptop.
Lawson snapped it shut before she reached it.
“Enough,” Daniel said.
She turned on him. “You don’t understand what I did for this family.”
“You forged Dad’s signature.”
“To protect what he built!”
“You tried to have my wife declared incompetent.”
Margaret pointed at me. “Because she was standing in the way!”
There it was.
No denial.
No excuse.
Just the truth.
The front door opened again.
Evan walked in carrying sunglasses and a coffee.
He smiled when he saw us.
Then he noticed Lawson.
The smile vanished.
Daniel stood in the center of the foyer.
“Perfect timing.”
Evan’s eyes flicked toward his mother.
She gave the smallest shake of her head.
Too late.
Daniel held up his phone.
“I just watched you on camera.”
Evan set the coffee down slowly.
“What camera?”
Lawson reopened the laptop.
Evan’s face changed.
Then he ran.
Not outside.
Upstairs.
Toward Daniel’s office.
Daniel swore and went after him.
I followed.
By the time we reached the landing, Evan was already inside the office.
Evan had always made chaos look accidental. A missed payment became a banking error. A wrecked car became bad weather. A business failure became a dishonest partner. Daniel had spent years cleaning up the edges of those disasters. Watching the video, I finally wondered how many of Evan's accidents had actually been plans that went wrong.

And the smell of burning paper was coming through the door.
