Chapter 1 - The Message Under the Table

My mother-in-law smiled at me while blood slid down my cheek.

That was the moment I knew I had waited too long.

The dining room looked like a Christmas card somebody had spent a fortune staging. Snow fell beyond the twenty-foot windows. Candles burned between crystal glasses. A string quartet played softly through hidden speakers. Every plate had a gold rim. Every napkin had been folded into a perfect white fan.

And beneath the table, my hand was shaking so badly I could barely unlock my phone.

Margaret Cole sat at the head of the table in a red designer dress, silver hair perfect, diamonds bright enough to catch every flame.

She raised her wineglass toward me.

"To family," she said.

Nobody else heard the threat in it.

My husband, Ethan, smiled weakly beside me. "Merry Christmas."

I looked at him and almost cried.

He still did not know what his mother had done upstairs forty minutes earlier.

He did not know why there was a scratch on my face.

He did not know she had grabbed my wrist hard enough to leave purple marks beneath the sleeve of my cream sweater.

And he definitely did not know what I had recorded.

Margaret leaned toward me.

"Claire," she said sweetly, "you're awfully quiet."

I put my phone face down beside my plate.

"I don't have much to say."

Her eyes narrowed.

"That's new."

A few relatives laughed.

Ethan glanced at me. "You okay?"

I nodded automatically.

Then stopped.

No.

I was done doing that.

My phone buzzed.

One new message.

I turned the screen toward myself.

I'M AT THE GATE. DO NOT LET HER TAKE YOUR PHONE.

My breath caught.

Margaret saw my expression.

Her smile disappeared.

"Who are you texting?"

"No one."

She stood.

"So now you lie at my table?"

Ethan frowned. "Mom, sit down."

Margaret ignored him. She reached across the table and grabbed for my phone.

I pulled it back.

Her hand struck my wineglass.

Red wine spilled across the linen.

"Give it to me," she hissed.

"No."

The room went quiet.

Margaret's face changed.

The elegant hostess vanished.

"You ungrateful little—"

She swung her hand.

The edge of her ring caught my cheek.

Pain flashed hot beneath my eye.

Ethan jumped up.

"What the hell?"

I touched the cut.

My fingers came away red.

Margaret froze for half a second.

Then she did something worse.

She smiled.

"Now maybe she'll stop performing."

Something inside me went cold.

I lifted my phone.

Ethan stared at the blood on my fingers.

"What happened to you?"

I looked straight at Margaret.

Then I pressed CALL.

The man on the other end answered immediately.

"Claire?"

My voice shook.

"I have proof."

A pause.

Then: "Open the front doors."

Margaret went pale.

A deep knock echoed through the mansion.

Three times.

One of the staff opened the double doors.

An older man in a charcoal suit stepped inside with two security men behind him.

Every person at the table turned.

Margaret dropped her glass.

It shattered.

Ethan stared at the stranger.

"Who is that?"

The man looked at me first.

Then at the blood on my cheek.

His expression hardened.

"My name is Victor Hale," he said.

Margaret whispered, "No."

Victor took one more step into the room.

Then he looked at Ethan.

May you like

"Your mother has been lying to you for twenty-eight years."

And the entire table stopped breathing.
