Chapter 6 - The Woman in the Trunk

They found Margaret's Mercedes abandoned behind an old warehouse near the harbor.

Charles was gone.

Margaret was in the trunk.

Alive.

Barely.

Her wrists were tied.

Her lip was split.

There was a bruise across her temple.

For the first time in my life, seeing her afraid did not feel satisfying.

It felt dangerous.

At the hospital, Ethan stood outside her room.

He could not make himself go in.

I understood.

Margaret had hurt me.

But she was still his mother.

Love does not switch off just because truth arrives.

It gets ugly first.

Victor came down the hallway.

"Charles isn't answering his phone."

Ethan laughed bitterly.

"That surprises you?"

"No."

Victor handed me a printed photo.

Traffic camera image.

Charles's Mercedes entering an industrial district.

A man in the passenger seat.

Older.

Broad shoulders.

White hair.

Victor pointed at him.

"Martin Keene."

"Who is he?"

"Former head of security for Cole Medical."

Ethan frowned.

"Former?"

Victor nodded.

"He disappeared after Rachel's death."

My skin prickled.

Margaret's hospital door opened.

A nurse stepped out.

"She's asking for Claire."

Ethan looked at me.

I almost said no.

Then I went in.

Margaret looked smaller in a hospital bed.

No diamonds.

No red dress.

No room full of people afraid of her.

Just an old woman with a bandage on her head.

She stared at me.

"You recorded me."

"Yes."

"You called Victor."

"Yes."

Her eyes filled.

"I told you not to."

"You don't get to give me orders anymore."

She closed her eyes.

Then whispered, "Fair."

That word shocked me more than an insult.

I moved closer.

"Where is Charles?"

"I don't know."

"What did he want?"

"The key."

My heart jumped.

"He took it from our house?"

She nodded.

"Why?"

Margaret looked toward the door.

Then back at me.

"Because your mother stole something from us."

"What?"

"Not money."

"Then what?"

"Names."

I waited.

She swallowed.

"Every patient in the illegal trials. Every doctor who signed false records. Every family we paid."

Victor had been right.

An archive.

"Where is it?"

"I don't know."

"Why did my mother have the key?"

Margaret's face twisted with guilt.

"Because I gave it to her."

I stared.

"You?"

"After Rachel died, I panicked."

"You were involved."

"Yes."

The word landed hard.

No excuse.

No denial.

She continued.

"I thought Daniel could fix it. He wanted to go public. Charles didn't."

"Then Daniel disappeared."

Margaret nodded.

"I helped him."

Ethan entered behind me.

She saw him.

Her face broke.

"Ethan."

He stayed by the door.

"You helped Dad disappear?"

"Yes."

"You let me think he was dead?"

Her eyes filled.

"I thought it was the only way to keep you alive."

He laughed once, wounded.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

Then Margaret looked at me.

"Claire, Charles isn't after the archive anymore."

"What is he after?"

She took a breath.

"You."

And from the hallway came a sharp metallic click.

Victor shouted:

May you like

"DOWN!"

The hospital window exploded.
