Chapter 2 - The Man Margaret Feared

Victor Hale did not raise his voice.
He did not need to.
Margaret looked more frightened by his calm than she would have by a gun.
Ethan stepped between us.
"Somebody better tell me what's going on."
Victor looked at him for a long moment.
"You look like your father."
Ethan's jaw tightened. "My father is dead."
Margaret snapped, "Get out of my house."
Victor ignored her.
One of his security men closed the front doors behind him.
The other placed a slim black case on the dining table.
Margaret's brother, Charles, stood up. "Are we being threatened?"
"No," Victor said. "You're being documented."
He opened the case.
Inside were copies of bank records, photographs, property deeds, and a small digital recorder.
I recognized every page.
Because I had spent six weeks collecting them.
Ethan looked at me.
"You knew he was coming?"
"I called him."
"Why?"
My throat tightened.
"Because I didn't know who else would believe me."
That hurt him.
I saw it.
But I was too tired to protect him from the truth.
Victor slid the first document across the table.
"Three million four hundred thousand dollars was transferred from the Cole Family Foundation over the last eighteen months."
Ethan frowned.
"Transferred where?"
"Companies controlled by your mother."
Margaret laughed once. "That's ridiculous."
Victor placed another page down.
"Here's the ownership trail."
Then another.
"And the tax filings."
Then another.
"And the signatures."
Ethan picked up the papers.
His face changed.
"That's my signature."
"Yes," Victor said.
"I never signed this."
"I know."
Margaret reached for the documents.
Victor's security man moved one hand.
Not aggressively.
Just enough.
She stopped.
Ethan looked at me.
"How long have you known?"
"About the money? Two weeks."
"About everything else?"
I swallowed.
"Longer."
Margaret's voice sharpened.
"Everything else? Claire, be careful."
Victor looked at her.
"That's exactly what you've been telling her for months, isn't it?"
No one spoke.
I reached into my purse.
My fingers found the recorder.
I pressed PLAY.
Margaret's voice filled the dining room.
"If you tell Ethan what you found, I will make sure you leave this family with nothing. No husband. No home. No reputation."
A cousin gasped.
Ethan slowly turned toward his mother.
Margaret's face was blank.
Then the recording continued.
"And if you ever try to contact Victor Hale again, I will make sure he can't help you."
Ethan looked at Victor.
"Why would she care if Claire contacted you?"
Victor's eyes moved to Margaret.
"Because she knows what I investigated in 1998."
Margaret stood very still.
Ethan said, "What happened in 1998?"
Victor closed the black case.
"Your mother buried a crime."
Margaret whispered, "Don't."
Victor looked at Ethan.
"And your father took the blame."
Ethan's chair scraped backward.
"My father died when I was six."
Victor nodded.
"That's what she told you."
The room went silent again.
I saw Ethan's face drain.
May you like
Then Victor said the words that cracked the evening in half.
"Your father is alive.
