Chapter 13 - The Company Ethan Never Mentioned

Ethan owned a company he had never told me about.
Not Cole Medical.
A private holding company called Grayline Ventures.
He inherited it through a trust when he turned thirty.
"What does it own?" I asked.
He sat across from me in Victor's office, looking sick.
"I thought it owned real estate."
"Thought?"
"I never managed it. Mom handled the trust."
Margaret sat in another room under guard.
Charles and Gideon were in federal custody.
For the first time, we had space to think.
Victor pulled Grayline's records.
The company owned warehouses.
Clinics.
Research equipment.
And one small pharmaceutical laboratory in New Hampshire.
Northstar leased that laboratory.
Ethan covered his face.
"My name is on this."
Victor said, "Ownership isn't the same as knowledge."
"Try explaining that to the families."
I understood his shame.
But shame can turn selfish fast.
I leaned forward.
"Don't make this about whether people think you're a good person."
He looked at me.
"Make it about what you do next."
He nodded.
That mattered.
We drove to the Grayline laboratory with federal agents.
The facility manager surrendered immediately.
He had records.
Lots of them.
Northstar had been conducting "metabolic resilience studies."
Translation:
Human experiments hidden inside wellness programs.
Participants signed forms they did not understand.
Some were given unapproved compounds.
Three had suffered major cardiac events.
One was still in a coma.
Ethan stood in the records room.
"Shut it down."
The federal agent replied, "Already happening."
Ethan looked at him.
"No. I mean every Grayline property. Freeze everything. Open every server. Give them access."
The agent raised an eyebrow.
"Your attorneys won't like that."
"I don't care."
For the first time, I saw Ethan choose truth before family.
Then a technician called us over.
"We found a restricted drive."
Password protected.
File name:
L.P. FINAL.
My hands went cold.
Linda Parker.
My mother.
The password hint read:
HER DAUGHTER'S FIRST CHRISTMAS.
I knew the answer.
My first Christmas had been in 1997.
Password:
CLAIRE1997.
The drive opened.
One video.
My mother appeared on screen.
She looked tired.
Scared.
Alive.
"Claire," she said, "if you're seeing this, then I couldn't finish what I started."
Tears blurred my eyes.
She continued.
"Do not trust the person who tells you Margaret killed me."
Victor and I looked at each other.
Then my mother said:
"Margaret tried to save me."
I stopped breathing.
Behind me, Ethan whispered, "What?"
My mother leaned closer to the camera.
"The person who pushed me down the stairs was someone I had trusted for twenty-five years."
The video glitched.
Then one last frame appeared.
A photograph.
Victor Hale.
And my mother's voice whispered:
May you like
"I'm sorry, Claire."
The screen went black.
