Chapter 11 - Grandma’s Secret

Grandma waited until Sophie was asleep.
Then she took me into the study and unlocked a drawer I had never seen her open.
Inside was a letter from my grandfather, written two months before his death.
Emily,
If you are reading this, I am gone, and your grandmother has finally decided you are old enough to know that I set aside money for you long before you married.
“You said the monthly transfers were from you.”
“They were.”
“But Grandpa created the fund.”
“Yes.”
“Why hide that?”
“Because your father knew about the original trust.”
Grandpa had created emergency funds for the grandchildren, and mine was larger because he worried I sacrificed too much just to keep peace.
After Dad’s business crisis, Grandpa quietly rebuilt my fund. Grandma later distributed it monthly instead of as a lump sum.
“Your father believed the money was family money,” she said. “It was not. It was yours.”
“So Mom knew there was more?”
“She suspected.”
Grandma handed me a second document.
My parents had asked her for a $300,000 loan five years earlier.
She refused.
Three months later, Mom “helped” me open the secret account.
“They used me to reach money you wouldn’t give them.”
Grandma nodded, eyes wet.
“I should have told you directly. I thought privacy would protect you.”
“It made it easier for them.”
“Yes.”
There was no defense in her voice. That mattered.
Grandma had made a fearful mistake. Mom had built a system from greed.
The next morning, Priya arrived with news from Dad’s seized company records.
Meridian Home Consulting had not only received my money. It had been used to move money from three other accounts.
“Whose?” I asked.
Priya looked grim.
“Your brother’s trust account is one.”
Jason swore.
“And the other two?”
“One belonged to your cousin Rachel.”
I knew Rachel had struggled for years after college. She worked two jobs and still rented a basement apartment.
“And the last?”
Priya turned the page toward Grandma.
“The last account belonged to someone named Sophie Carter Mitchell.”
My heart stopped.
“That’s my daughter.”

The account had been opened three months before Sophie was born.
And according to the signature card, I had opened it myself.
