Chapter 14 - The Video That Could Take My Daughter

Hotel security brought Mom to a conference room while Daniel joined by video call.

She looked terrible. No makeup. Hair unbrushed. For once she did not look like Linda Carter, woman who always had an answer.

She looked like a person who had finally run out of exits.

“The original bedroom footage shows Emily putting Sophie on the bed,” Mom said. “Sophie rolls toward the edge. Emily catches her.”

I remembered catching Sophie the instant she rolled toward the edge.

“Ryan had an editor remove the frames where you catch her,” Mom continued. “Then he cut in audio from another night when you yelled.”

“You knew he was doing that?”

“Not until yesterday.”

“Yesterday?”

She looked down.

“You were willing to sign a petition saying I was dangerous.”

“I thought it would scare you into settling.”

“You thought taking my child would scare me into giving Ryan money?”

Mom flinched.

“No. I thought he would ask for shared custody and you would stop the fraud case.”

“You do understand that sentence is insane, right?”

Tears ran down her face.

Daniel cut in. “Where is the edited file?”

“Ryan has copies. One is on a cloud account. One is on a drive.”

“Where is Ryan?”

“I think he’s at a cabin near Lake Mercer. His college friend owns it.”

Police were notified.

Mom reached for my hand.

I pulled away.

“Emily, please. I am trying to fix this.”

“No. You’re trying to survive it.”

She closed her eyes.

“Maybe both.”

Before dawn, officers found the cabin empty.

Inside were clothes, cash, two prepaid phones, and a printed itinerary for San José, Costa Rica.

They also found the flash drive containing the edited video.

A forensic specialist confirmed manipulation within hours.

That should have ended Ryan’s custody strategy.

Instead, he escalated.

At 10:31 a.m., every local news station received an anonymous email.

The edited video was attached.

Headline: WEALTHY HEIRESS CAUGHT ENDANGERING INFANT.

By noon it was online.

By one, strangers were calling me a monster.

By two, someone posted Grandma’s address.

And at 2:17, a brick came through her living-room window.
