Chapter 15 - He Turned Strangers Against Me

The brick landed six feet from Sophie’s play mat.

Grandma did not scream.

I did.

Jason grabbed Sophie while I dropped to the floor, glass raining over the rug.

Taped to the brick was a printed screenshot from the fake video.

BABY ABUSER.

Police arrived within minutes.

The story spread faster than the truth.

People saw twelve chopped seconds and decided they knew me.

My old classmates messaged me.

A woman from my mom group called me disgusting.

Three strangers threatened to report me to child services.

One man wrote that mothers like me deserved to lose their kids forever.

Grandma found me there.

“Look at me,” she said.

“I can’t do this.”

“Yes, you can.”

“They believe him.”

“They believe twelve seconds. Twelve seconds is not your life.”

“It could be enough to ruin it.”

“Then we give them the rest.”

Daniel advised caution, but the forensic report was already complete. With the investigator’s recording and Natalie’s messages, we had enough to challenge the narrative publicly without compromising the case.

I did one interview.

No makeup. No mansion behind me. No dramatic music.

I sat beside Daniel and said, “That video was edited. The original shows me catching my daughter before she fell. The person who distributed the altered version is also under investigation for financial fraud and identity theft.”

Then the station played both clips side by side.

The difference was obvious.

Public opinion turned with the same ugly speed it had turned against me.

Now Ryan was the monster.

I did not enjoy it.

I understood too well how easily crowds could be aimed.

That evening, federal agents arrested Marsha Bell at a motel two states away.

She agreed to cooperate.

Her statement tied Linda directly to the forged notarizations and tied Ryan to the fake passport.

Then she revealed something none of us expected.

“There was another person,” Daniel told us.

“Who?”

“The bank employee who kept approving the transfers.”

Priya’s face sharpened. “Name?”

Daniel read from the cooperation memo.

“Thomas Wade.”

Grandma’s coffee cup slipped from her hand.

“You know him?”

She whispered, “He managed my accounts for twenty-two years.”
