Chapter 13 - What Happened the Day Eli Was Born

Jax remembered that day differently.

That frightened him more than the photograph.

“Hannah told me Cole was already gone by then,” he said.

Miriam studied the wider image. “Photo says otherwise.”

Eli looked between the adults. “Can somebody please tell me what happened?”

Jax sat on the edge of the manager’s desk.

“You were born early. Your mom was nineteen. Aaron was twenty-one. They weren’t married yet.”

Eli stared at the photograph.

“I came to the hospital because Hannah called me. Cole showed up too.”

“Why?”

“I thought he came to make peace.”

Jax laughed bitterly. “That was my first mistake.”

He remembered Cole bringing flowers, shaking Aaron’s hand, acting like a protective older brother. Two weeks later, the warehouse burned. Cole vanished. Federal agents moved Jax under another name after his testimony.

“Hannah said you left because you hated us,” Eli said.

Jax flinched.

“She told you that?”

“She said you chose a motorcycle club over family.”

Darla looked at Jax.

He swallowed.

“That part isn’t completely wrong.”

Before the investigation, Jax had spent years running errands for Cole’s motorcycle-linked smuggling crew. He had not moved drugs or guns, but he had transported cash, lied to police, and looked away when people got hurt.

“I helped your uncle build something ugly,” Jax said. “Then I tried to destroy it.”

“Why didn’t you come back?”

“Because the federal agents said Cole’s people would use Hannah to find me.”

Miriam added quietly, “And because we believed Cole was dead.”

Eli’s expression hardened. “You still could’ve called.”

Jax nodded. “Yes.”

There was no excuse good enough for that.

A phone rang.

Not theirs.

The branch manager’s desk phone.

Jax answered.

Cole said, “You found the full picture.”

“Why were you at the hospital?”

“To meet my son.”

Jax went cold.

Eli stared at him.

Cole chuckled. “Oh, brother. Hannah never told you?”

Jax’s voice dropped. “Told me what?”

“That Aaron wasn’t Eli’s biological father.”

Eli stopped moving.

Cole continued:

“I was.”
