Chapter 10 - The Payment

Grant had kept the payment secret because shame was easier to carry alone.
Now shame sat in the room with everyone else.
"Two million dollars?" Leah said. "For what?"
Grant poured a glass of water and did not drink it.
"Victor had been covering company losses through unauthorized loans. Caroline found out. She wanted the board told immediately. Victor begged me for forty-eight hours to fix it."
Renee asked, "And instead?"
"He threatened to release private emails that would make Caroline look responsible for the accounting. They were altered, but proving that would take time. She was chairing a hospital fundraiser. Tyler was already having trouble at school. I thought I could buy time."
Tyler stared at him. "So you paid him."
"Yes."
"And Mom knew?"
"No."
Tyler laughed bitterly. "Everybody keeps secrets and then acts shocked when everything explodes."
Grant accepted that one.
"You're right."
The answer seemed to disarm Tyler more than an argument would have.
Grant continued, "I met Victor at a private parking structure. I transferred the money from an account I controlled. The next morning, Caroline died. I deleted my location history because I panicked. I thought if the board saw I had met Victor, they'd think I was part of his scheme."
Leah stared at him. "Were you?"
"No."
"Then why should we believe you?"
Grant nodded slowly. "You shouldn't because I say so. You should verify it."
He handed Renee his phone and laptop.
"Take everything."
For the next six hours, Priya reconstructed deleted records.
At 8:16 p.m., she found the first useful piece: surveillance video from the parking structure's archived payment system.
Grant appeared on camera at 11:38 p.m.
Victor arrived at 11:41.
They argued for seventeen minutes.
Then Grant left.
Victor did not.
At 12:12 a.m., another vehicle entered the structure.
Ryan Cole stepped out.
Leah grabbed the edge of the desk.
"Ryan knew Victor before he ever met me."
Priya nodded.
A minute later, a third person appeared on camera.
A woman wearing a hooded coat approached Victor from the stairwell.
The angle did not show her face.
But Tyler recognized the coat.
"That's Mom's."
Grant went cold.
Priya froze the frame.
The woman lifted one hand.
On her wrist was the red ribbon with the brass key.
Leah whispered, "Mom was there."
Renee leaned toward the screen.
"And she wasn't alone."
Behind Caroline, half-hidden in the stairwell, stood a teenage boy.

Tyler stared at himself on the monitor.
"I don't remember being there."
