Chapter 19 - The Last Lie

Police refused to let Leah go alone.

She did not argue.

That was how much she had changed in six days.

Grant, Leah, Renee, and two detectives drove to the abandoned clinic while Tyler stayed with Malik under guard.

The building had been closed for renovations, but a side door stood open.

Inside, they found Ryan in an exam room with a bandage around his arm.

Leah stopped in the doorway.

Everything in her body wanted to retreat.

Ryan looked at her and started crying.

"I know you hate me."

"This isn't about what I feel," she said. "Where is your mother?"

Ryan looked toward the adjoining room.

Marianne Cole sat inside, wrists resting calmly on the table.

She was in her sixties, silver-haired, composed, still wearing the expression of a therapist waiting for a patient to reach the correct conclusion.

"Hello, Leah," she said.

Leah went rigid.

Grant stepped beside her.

Marianne smiled faintly. "Always rescuing people, Grant. Even when they don't ask."

Renee said, "You provided Victor with confidential therapy records."

"I provided information to protect my son."

Ryan flinched.

"Mom—"

"Be quiet."

The words snapped like a leash.

Ryan obeyed automatically.

Leah saw it and understood more in one second than she had in two years with him.

Marianne continued, "Victor involved Ryan in financial crimes. Once Caroline discovered them, she threatened to expose everyone. I encouraged a peaceful solution. Victor chose something else."

Grant said, "You knew about the brake line."

"I knew he wanted to frighten her."

The exact phrase Elliot had used.

Renee's eyes narrowed. "Did you give Tyler medication?"

Marianne did not answer.

Ryan did.

"She gave Victor sedatives from the clinic."

Marianne turned slowly toward her son.

Ryan's voice shook. "She said Tyler only needed to forget one night."

Leah closed her eyes.

Marianne's composure finally cracked.

"You ungrateful little coward."

Ryan recoiled.

Grant said, "Why did Tyler need to forget?"

Ryan looked at him.

"Because Tyler saw Victor switch Caroline's car keys at the parking garage. He saw Victor hand the real set to Elliot. Caroline realized Tyler had seen too much. She took him home. Victor followed and drugged him."

Renee asked, "And Caroline's phone?"

"My mother took it from the crash scene before police arrived. She was listed as Caroline's emergency mental-health contact and showed up before Grant."

Marianne stood abruptly.

The detectives moved.

She raised both hands.

"I'm not armed."

Then she looked straight at Leah.

"Your mother would still be alive if you had stayed away from Ryan. She only discovered Victor because she was trying to save you."

Leah took the hit visibly.

Grant stepped forward, but she lifted a hand.

"No."

She faced Marianne herself.

"My mother made her choices. Victor made his. Ryan made his. You made yours. You don't get to hand me the bill for all of you."

For the first time, Marianne had nothing to say.

Police led her away.

Ryan remained seated, crying.

"Leah, please. I can explain everything."

She looked at him for a long moment.

"You already did. For two years. Every time you made me doubt what I saw."

She turned and walked out.

Outside, Grant's phone rang.

Tyler.

Grant answered immediately.

"Dad?"

"I'm here."

Tyler's voice was shaky.

"You need to come home."

Grant's heart stopped.

"Why?"

"Because Uncle Victor's lawyer just delivered a package."

"Don't open it."

A pause.

"I already did."

Grant closed his eyes.

"What's inside?"

Tyler whispered, "Mom's final letter. And it's addressed to me."
