Chapter 17 - Caroline's Last Message

Victor grabbed the phone.

Grant slammed into him before he reached the door.

They hit the rug hard.

The phone skidded under the desk.

Victor swung once, catching Grant across the cheek.

Grant drove him back with his forearm but stopped himself from turning rage into revenge.

"Don't," Renee shouted from the doorway. "Grant, don't give him that."

Police entered seconds later.

Victor was handcuffed on Caroline's rug.

Even then, he smiled.

"You think the phone saves you?"

Grant wiped blood from the inside of his lip.

"No. I think the truth matters."

Victor laughed. "The truth is a file people edit after the fact."

Tyler appeared behind Malik.

Victor looked at him.

"You know me better than they do."

Tyler's face tightened.

"I thought I did."

That answer finally erased Victor's smile.

Priya bagged the phone as evidence, then cloned it under police supervision at the station.

Most of Caroline's data had been wiped.

Not all.

A cloud voicemail draft remained, never sent.

The timestamp was 8:14 a.m. on the morning she died.

Grant, Tyler, and Leah listened together.

Caroline's voice was calm but hurried.

"Grant, if you're hearing this, I ran out of time. Victor thinks this is about company control. It isn't. Not really. It's about Dad's trust. Victor borrowed against assets he never owned, and if the board audits the structure, he loses everything."

She took a breath.

"Leah, I am sorry I involved Ryan. I thought he was helping me document Victor. I was wrong. He chose money. If you ever doubt yourself around him, leave. Please leave."

Leah covered her mouth.

Caroline continued.

"Tyler, if Victor ever tells you I was disappointed in you, he's lying. You are allowed to be angry with me. You are allowed to say terrible things and still be loved."

Tyler broke then.

Not loudly.

He folded forward and cried into both hands while Grant held the back of his neck.

The recording continued.

"Grant, there is one more thing. Elliot knows about the brakes. He thinks Victor only wants to scare me. I don't know if he'll stop him. The proof is in the—"

The voicemail cut off.

Everyone stared at the waveform.

"That's it?" Grant asked.

Priya shook her head. "The file is truncated."

Renee looked at the cloned phone data.

"Maybe not."

She pointed at an unsent photo taken four minutes after the voicemail.

It showed a row of framed family pictures in Caroline's study.

One frame was circled in red using the phone's markup tool.

Grant looked toward the evidence photograph of the room.

The frame showed Tyler at age seven, holding a baseball glove.

Behind the original photo was a folded document.

A bank ledger.

At the bottom of the first page appeared a name none of them expected.

Grant Mercer.
