Chapter 10 - The Honest Detective

By eight in the morning, Jonah Pierce was on every local news station.
The headline was simple.
RESTAURATEUR LINKED TO BROTHER'S DEATH INVESTIGATION.
Stella stared at the television.
"They move fast."
"Hale had this ready," Wyatt said. "Nico wasn't improvising."
Jonah muted the screen.
"They needed a witness. Stella survived, so they're using Nico."
A knock sounded downstairs.
Everyone froze.
Three slow knocks.
Then two.
Wyatt checked the camera.
"It's Attorney Rachel Sloan."
Jonah opened the door.
Rachel entered carrying two phones and a legal pad. She was in her forties, wearing a black coat over gym clothes, as if someone had pulled her out of an early run.
"You couldn't have a quiet scandal?" she asked Jonah.
"Apparently not."
She looked at Stella. "You must be Stella Hayes."
Stella's shoulders tightened.
Rachel noticed. "I'm Jonah's attorney. I represent him, not you. That's important. If you want your own lawyer, I'll find one who doesn't answer to him."
Stella blinked.
"Why are you telling me that?"
"Because every person in this room should know who owes loyalty to whom."
Jonah nodded once. "Get her separate counsel."
That answer surprised Stella too.
Rachel turned to the laptop. "What do you have?"
Wyatt showed her Gabriel's video.
Rachel watched without speaking.
When it ended, she sat very still.
"This can destroy Hale," she said. "If it's authenticated."
"And Dean," Stella added.
"Yes. But if we release it now, they will claim it's manipulated. Worse, everyone on that list gets warned and starts burning evidence."
Jonah leaned against the table. "So we wait."
"We verify quietly and get it into the hands of someone Hale doesn't control."
"Federal?"
"Maybe. But your name on that target list makes this complicated. You are not exactly a beloved civic volunteer."
Jonah almost smiled. "I've been called worse."
Stella looked at Rachel. "If I testify?"
"About Dean abusing you? About the forged financial records? Yes. That helps. But the larger conspiracy needs documents, accounts, and independent witnesses."
Stella thought of Dean's blue ledger.
"Then we find it."
Rachel glanced at her bruised face. "You should be resting."
"I've been resting for three years."
Before anyone could answer, a siren chirped outside.
Then another.
Wyatt checked the camera and swore.
Six police vehicles filled the street.
Victor Hale stepped out of the lead car holding a folded piece of paper.
Rachel moved to the window.
"Search warrant?"
Jonah's expression went flat.
"No."
A loudspeaker crackled outside.
Hale's voice filled the brownstone.
"Jonah Pierce, come out with your hands visible. We have a warrant for your arrest in connection with the murder of Gabriel Pierce."
Stella turned toward Jonah.
He did not look surprised.
May you like
He looked disappointed.
Then he said, "They found the drive faster than I expected."
